PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY. J UNE 4, 1986, WHITBY FREE PRESS GO unveils Whitby station By MIKE JOHNSTON Free Press Staff The new GO station to be built at Brock St. in 1987, will be the most modern station anywhere on the GO system, according to Regional works chairman Gerry Emm. And with a price tag in excess of $4 milion, it is also the most expensive. According to an artists rendering of the station there will be north and south parking lots as well as designated areas for Kiss 'n Ride. Councillor Emm jokingly explained the Kiss 'n Rides are for those people that get dropped at the station, kiss good-bye and hop aboard the train. A road leading to the south side of the terminal will be constructed from Victoria St. and motorists who park there or are drop- ped off will be able to walk to the station via a tunnel which will be built below the tracks. "There will be cameras monitoring the parking lot as' well as the tunnel 24 hours a day and both will be well lit," said Emm. Parking will be available for up to 1,000 cars and the GO corporation will have land set aside for an ad- ditional 450 to 500 parking spaces. "This will be the first station on the line which will run on the honour system," explained the councillor, who's en- thusiasm for the design was clearly evident. When you enter the station a computerized ticket machine will verify your ticket making rush hour lines that much faster, explained Emm. "Of course there will be someone at the destination point to double check the ticket," he added. Emm said the design of the station, which has been received with enthusiasm by the Regional works and planning departments as well as Gary Herrema, chairman of Regional Council, is in keeping with the concept of Whitby. "We didn't want the station to have a plain Jane look of being cold. It has a very Victorian type style to it and it has a lot of charac- ter. It takes people into con- sideration for comfort and shelter." For shelter, the station will provide a plastic en- closed platform effectively ending the days of standing in the cold waiting for a train, which is the situation presently at Pickering. While the station is very modern it also sustains the appearance of some of the older buildings in Whitby, he said. "This is a station people will want to come and see." The station will run full service including 20 minute service during rush hour said councillor Emm but he could not say if express trains running from Whitby to Union Station are to be scheduled. But he did say that when a train enters the station, four GO buses will be waiting to transfer people to Oshawa, Newcastle and other destinations. Four Whitby transit buses will also be waiting to deliver passengers home. Construction on the station will begin in the early spring of 1987 and should be completed in the fall of the same year, said the councillor. The $4 million price tag will be paid by GO with no money coming from the town or the region, he ad- ded. The drawings of the new station will be displayed for Whitby council within two weeks.
