PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, MAY 21,1l986 WHITBY FREE PRESS Lios launch Journey for Sigh *Everythlng 15 ready for the Whltby Lions 4th annual Jour- ney for Sight coming up Sunday, June 8. This year Drganizers .are hoping to ralse $5,000 to help the blind and sight lmpaired. Beginning at 1 p.m. at Iroquois Park, everyone le invited tot join the many Lions Club mem- bers, Lioness and their familles and frlends as they set out on a 10.5 kilometer trek for pledges they will be collecting between now and the day of the big event. Anyone who would like to jola the Lions Journey for Sight can pick: up pledge sheets at anyone of a number of local businesses ln. ciuding the TD Bank, Mlddleton's, the Credit Union (at Kent and Dundas Sts.), Canadien Tire or by calling Jour- ney for Slght chafrman BUIf Sorichetti at 668- 8278 or 668-7332. Accordlng to Sorichet- tJ, - 400 pledge sheets bave gone out to Wbitby Mlnor Basebail as weil and the Lions are hoping to see a lot of young people make the jour- w ney for what he con- iders an Important cause. "<I would encourage anyone andl everyone to pick up a pledge sheet and walk because thisis a greet cause," said Sorichetti last week. The spokesman said the sight lmpaired bave been one of the Lions' biggest causes for as long as he could remnember. Proceeds from this year's journey wlll be dlstributed amnong the Lake Joseph Holiday Camp for the Blind; the CNIB Durham Advlsory Board; the annual CNIB Plcnlc and, to Canine Vision.Canada. Canine Vision Canada, accordlng to Sorichetti, is a good example of how Lions' fundlng bas been in- vested la aid of the sight impalred. Canine Vision Canada was bufit by the Lions several years ago in Oakville as a centre for the training and mat- chlng of guide dogs wlth their blind owners. Sorichetti sald for many years the Lions con- trlbuted 'to a similar centre in Rochester New York but the tlxne came when the orgenization decided It wes time Canada hadt a guide dog training cen- tre of its own. The centre is entlrely malntained and funded by the Lions and lt's an expensive proposition. Sorichetti sald for every 50 doge brought into the centre for training only one or two might make the grade and then the training begins in car- nest and the sight im- peired candidates are brought la to be mat- ched and trained with their dogs. By training's end, Sorichetti sald it can coet, as much as $7,000 per match. It le events such as Whtby's Journey for Sight that help to keep Canine Vision Canada and the other valuable services for the blind running smoothly and It is oniy through the par- ticipation of the people of Whtby that the Jour- ney for Sight wlII be a succese, said Sorlchetti. Last year was not a good one for the event, he seid and when the big day arrlved only 35 people turned out to walk the 10.5 kilometer improvement.
