PAGE 6, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30.1M98, WHITBY FREE PRESS Register now for Junior Fire Dept. Members of the Whit- by Fire Department are gearing up for the 14th Annual Junior Fire Department Program and if the response to the program in previous summers is any in- dication, aspiring young firemen would be ad- vised to get their ap- plications in early. According to Whitby fire prevention officer Dave Bemnis, the program is a one-of-a- kind opportunîty for boys and girls il and 12 years of age to gain a lit- tde first-hand experien- ce in firefighting and, more importantly, to acquire along the way a knowledge of fire safety and prevention. It can ail be attributed to Chief Crouch - he star- ted the program 14 years ago - and the resulting awareness has probably established a higher standard of fire safety in Whitby than in many other com- munities," said Mr. Bemis. A little simple mathematies will bear Mr. Bemis out. Every year 160 young peopie go through the Junior Fire Department Program and in most cases those young people will go home and teach their families what they have learned about fire prevention. Over the course of the 14 years the program has been operating, a lot of Whitby residents have learned about fire safety and if that was al the program accom- plished, the fire preven- tion officer believes it has ail been welI worth it. However, according to Mr. Remis the children also manage to have a lot of fun during the two week program. "We like them to get a good taste of what fire fighting is, lîke. It's al hands-on training and practice with the fire fighting equipment," said Mr. Remnis. Their first day in the program, the youngsters give the station a good going over from stem to stern. They are allowed to moot through the cupboards and the pumpers, they see the dispatch and Children who sign up for this year's Junior Fire Department prograni will be getting hands-on experience with many of the jobs performed by Whitby's firefighters, including siiding down the fire pole as shown here by Unit 9, 105 Riviera 1)r., Markham 1,3R 5J7 4791 learn how it is operated but, most important of ail according to Mr. Bemnis, the Whitby emergency nuniber is driiled into their heads and by the end of their first day in the prograin, the children are not likeiy to forget it - 668-9311.
