The grant wlll be used to explore~ needs for child care within Durham Region. Barbara Kennedy has been hired to conduci the research ... in con- sultation with the Child Care Committee of the SPCO-W. The commit- tee feels there is a Iack of good, recent, local in- formation. The day care study is a means of providing 'social plan- ners information about the scope of regional needs for child care ser- vices. The fundamental issue is what types of child care services are needed for wbat children for w.bat pur- pose. Three major areas of child care needs will be examined. One area is the needs of parents and their' chlld care arrangements; the second, the needs of the caregivers of childcare services in Durham Region and last the opinions and experien- ces of key informants. The main issues will be the availability of cbuld care; the cost; the flexible hour arrangements for emergencies, shift work; weekends, holldays; atter school hours; P.D. days and parent relief. The resuits are expected to reflect gaps in services experienced. by par- ticular population! Barbara Kennedy is a research worker who has been in the field of child care for 15 years. She plans to obtain data from various groups tbrough different methods such as questionnaires, per- sonal interviews, telephone surveys and community meetings. Geographical and regional considerations such as rural and urban areas or those of higher and slower growth rates will be taken into ac- count. By JAN DODGE Free Press Staff A Durham College student from Whitby has won a bronze medal in a culinary arts com- petition two years in a row. Wendy Moore, 19, from Otter Creek is a second-year student in food and beverage management. She, with four first-year studentsý and an instructor, won one gold, two silver, and tbree bronze medals plus a trophy. The competition, sponsored by the Muskoka and District Chef's Association, at- tracted over 170 entries, including those from George Brown College in Toronto and Georgian College in Barrie. Moore won this year for her "'gateau", a 12- inch round fruit cake, decorated for a wedding in the Austrian lace method. Last year she earned ber medal for her petits fours. Although judging was for composition, presen- tation, workmanship, difficulty, .,-nd originality 'only,,' thé flavor of Moore's cake must have béen good too. Just a couple of days after the contest sbe reported it was "already haif gone," devoured by ber friends and family. Nineteen year old Scott M4cQuillan, from Oshawa, winner of the gold award, also won the Canadian Armed Forces trophy for the best exbibit in Its category. His "«gateau", a 12- layer confection bad sides coated witb brick chocolate and top iced witb Bavarian cream, garnisbed with glazed strawberries. The silver winners were Teresa Vos, 19, of Hampton for ber "specialty", a fruitcake based centrepiece decorated witb mar- zipan; and John Palmer, 30, of Nestieton with bis "buffet cold platter", made of three different Wellingtons. Besides Moore, the bronze winners were Christine Watson,-19, of St. Tbomas, for ber "buffet cold platter", a glazed wbole salmon; and instructor Michael Hopgood for bis "lbuffet cold platter", a bam decorated with truffles. Hopgood competed in a professional class. I The judges, led by- Canada's gold-medal winning teamn from the. Frankfurt Culinary à Olympics remarked, Hopgood said, that standards in the Hun- tsville competition were s0 bigh, tbe w ork could have been entered in the Olympics.
