PAGE 8,WEDNESDAY,JANUARY 15, 1986 WHITBY FREE PRESS Board hears trappnng protest By JAN DODGE Free Press Staff The Durham Board of Education will not act on a protest against allowing a trapper to speak to Whitby school cbildren. In a tie-breaking vote at the Jan. 13 meeting the chairman voted, No, to Osbawa Larry Corrigan's motion to refer the matter to the program committee. Edie Gomille, a tax- payer, was objecting to the recent presentation by a P ort Perry trapper to students in the out- door club at Witby Senior Public School. She argued that such a presentation was again- st the Ministry of Education guideline: "Moral values sbould permeate ail aspects of the scbool program. " Gomille said the children had been given propaganda for trap- ping. Holding up a leg hold trap she said, "Anyone who says this will not hurt animais is telling alile." She also showed pic- tures of the Coneybear trap. Gomille, who had wanted to present the other side of the question to the students but said she was refused by their teachers, questioned whetber sucb a presentation as the trapper's should have been made at ail. Speaking to Corrigans motion Whitby trustee John Buchanan asked why the board was getting involved. Was it not like anyone else explaining bis job, asked the trustee. Whitby trustee Pat Bowman went througb a number of Ministry of Education guidelines, none of wbich she said were violated by the trapper's presentation to the students. My only New Year's resolution is to neyer put myself through this again or my next move could be a pad- ded ceil. On looking back over 1985, I'm glad its over what with althe terrorist activity, natural disasters and hunger around the world. The home front was not too bright eitber as our governments made some major booboos in my opinion. Not the least of which was the move to separate school funding. The way I see it, it merely paves the way for every religion and sect, no matter bow crackpot it may be to start up its own school at public expense. We could end up where we were fifty years ago with our landscape dotted with littie one room scboolhouses and paren- ts forced to take whatever is nearest or arrange their childrens transportation themselves to the school of their choice. Now the latest fiasco is preventing doctors from extra billing.
