WIIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1986,PAGE 9 Whitby Red Cross and Jaycettes team*-up for Jan. 14 blood dm10i It has beeii aptly called the gift of life and on Jan. 14, the Whitby branch of the Red Cross will once again be asking Whitby residents to give so that others might live. Giving blood, accor- ding to Whitby blood donor clinic chairm.-il Fromi page 8 Mr. Pollock. At twice monthly dinner meetings, Lions mem- bers plan and organize events to raise funds for their primary charities, the blind and the deaf. In addition to these, the Lions Club has bran- ched out in recent years to raise funds for a world-wide skills program designed to provide adolescents with an alternative to drugs and are now con- tributing to diabetes research as well. In Whitby the Lions Club also contributes to minor sports such as hockey and basebaîl. Annual dues paid by Margaret Horton, isaa great way to start the new year. January is a less than ideal time of the year to be running a clinic said the chair- man. The cold weather tends to keep donors away while colds and flu make other braver soles ineligible. Nevertheless Mrs. Horton is counting members include a $25 international fee and another $60 to cover the local organizations in- ternai expenses. The founding meeting will be held in the Brooklin Community Centre on Cassels Road Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and anembers of District A16 Lions executive will be present to answer al questions. Organizers are also extending an invitation to any Whitby residents who might be interested, in joining either the Whitby Lions or the Whitby Lioness Club to come out and find out what the Lions Club is ail about. For more information on a big contingent of regular donors and hoping that posters printed up by the Whit- by Jaycettes will lure enough first-time donors to help the clinic reach its January target of 325 units of blood. For the first time the Whitby Jaycettes will be sponsoring the clinic contact Herb Visser, 655-8894, Bill Schat- zmann 668-3338 or Eleanor Stevenson 668- 5231, ,and some of its mem- bers wiIl be among the 18 blue smocked volun- teers helping out on the big day. The cost of the clinie ta not that great, according to Jaycette president Nancy Mc- Dowell, and most of the money will be spent on cookies and juice and other snacks to help the donors get back on their feet. On the other hand the returns that can be reaped from even one unit of blood are priceless. "The (Red Cross) in Toronto really depends on us because we bring in a steady number of units. We're pretty con- stand," said Mrs. Hor- ton of the Whitby clinica which are held four times a year. However, 325,units of blood is not an overly ambitious target accor- ding to chairman., Although Whitby's population has soared in recent years, she said the clinica' targets have not really kept in step with that growth and a town of Whitby's size has a mucli greater potential. "When you think of the number of eligible donors that are out there and the number that actually show up, the turnout is pretty pitiful," said Mrs. Hor- ton. The best clinic the local Red Cross ever had was last Aprîl 9 when 433 donors showed up to give blood. The total number of units collected in 1985 was 1,437. Although Toronto clinics have noticed a drop in blood donations over the past year which they attribute to the fund of misinformation being circulated about AIDS, Mrs. Horton said the scare has not had an impact on the Whitby clinics. She stressed however that there la absolutely no risk of donors acquiring AlDS. "Ail the needies are used only once and then they are thrown away. There is no danger to the blood donor. The danger is to the recipient," said Mrs. Horton. In a pamphlet provided by the Red Cross on the day of the clinic, people in the AIDS risk groupa are advised not togive blood she added. The clinic will be held Tuesday, Jan. 14 frorn 1 tili 8 p.m. at the Legion àýA&-See page 16 ONLY ~1695' MADE TO SÉIL FOR1 MODEL #320 24 x 12" x 80.
