July... WIIITBY FREE PRESS, MONDAY, DE-CEMBER 30, 1985, PAGE 15 Town n"aes overtures to attr&ct new Toyota plant Whtby's 'Japanese Connection" could give it the edge ln convincing Toyota te, locate its new Canadian car assembly plant here. That is, Mayor Bob Atteraley says, if the provincial or federal governents don't step i to offer the Japanese auto giant a financial incentive ta, locate somewhere else. Attersley confirmed la an interview last Frlday morning that Whltby was dscreetly lobbylng for the plant which could produce, literally, thousands 0f new jobs and tax assessment for the commnunity. "If there la no inter- ference from the provincial or federal goveraments in incen- tive grants, Whitby is right at the top," he said adding that the town couldn't compete if either senior gover- nment of fers Toyota a $10 or $20 million Incen- tive grant ta locate in somne other part of On- tario. IlWe just can't win against that," Attersley noted. The mayor did point out that Whitby does have a few advantages to offer the auto maker as weIl as a foot in the door, as It were. Since last year's visit by a deleg(ation of Japanese governmnent officiais, Whtby bas ileveloped its own apecial relationship wth officiais In that Far East country. Attersley noted that the lines of communication are always open to tliem. And while Whtby bas a plant that Toyota could make easy use of, Attersley also noted that they look at more than that. The Japanese look at the whole community before investing. The mayor noted they look at such things as the JUlV... availability of housing for its employees, achool space for their children, the ac- cesibilty to healtb care and recreational facilities and a host of other thinga before making a decision. "AÀnd itby is the type of community they love ta go to," Attersley said addlng that the town i already home ta two major Japanese Makita Power Tools in addition to being close to major transpor- tation networks such as Hwy. 401 and Lake On- tario, Whitby is also geographically close to General Motors of Canadas main Oshiawa production facility. Attersley pointed out that Toyota is already involved in a joint yen- ture with G.M. in nection could prove ad- vantageous. G.M. also owna the 477,000 square foot Firestofle factory on South Blair Street which the mayor believes would be ideal for Toyota. Except for relatlvely minor modlifications to make it a car plant, Attersley says it'a "ready to be used". "We've got sorne Attersley saîd, "and we do have some connec- tions in Japan" While Toyota doesn't have a apecifîc tuietable as Of yet, the mayor liopes that some kind of decision wîll be announced in the for- seeable future. "Other than a speclfic grant or something, we're definitely in the running," Attersley added.
