Ed Werenich, the 1983 world chamnpion, f rom Toronto won the $21,000 Sun Life Invitational Bonspiel with a 4-3 decision over Stu Ben- nett of Whitby in an event that had eluded him for 16 years. "I think 've won most of the other major spiels in Ontario but this one." Werenich was hard- pressed to down the former Winnipeg curler when Bennett wouldn't allow him to play his free-wheeiing style. IWe tried to keep it simple (against Ed) because they had been playing the garbage game to perfection al bonspiel long," said Bennett, who moved to Whitby six years ago af- ter reaching the Manitoba provincials in 1978 and 1979. At one imne Werenich even considered Ben- nett for his owri rink when iooking for new curlers. "I askecl Stu to play for me in 1983 and he would have if Paul Savage had not corne over to play third," Werenich explained. Along with Savage and second John Harrison split a $7,000 cheque.
