The concept of com- bining weight training with fitness classes is unique to Gold's, said Brown. While numerous weight training centres and fitness centres exist, no other club in the area offers both. Soon the franchis will be opening a neN facility to serve peopli in the Whitby area. Ninety-nine percent of the people who work out at Gold's Gymn in Oshawa come to im- prove their general fit- ness, not their bicepts, says assistant manager Libby Brown. We do get the serious muscle btilders, but most of our- members are interested in toning their bodies and just louking better." To accommodate the wide variety of clientele -1500 in ail - Gold's Gymn is equipped with a room- full of equipment and a full contingent of trained staff. Equipment ranges from the scientifically designed Finnish, une "David", to the Zen Tee pulley systemn and Olympie Free Weights. "The David equipment is a real pull for the women, many of whomn are intimidated by free weights. It's the best way to tone and define muscles," said Brown. The David equip. ment's popularity stems largely fromn its safety feature - a counter- weight systemn which proteets weight lifters from injury and muscle strain. Everyone who joins the health club receives a detailed fitness test. On the basis of this evaluation, an' in- dividualized exercise programn is designed af- ter which memnbers are let loose to work out on their own. Staff are always on hand to provide one-on-one assistance when needed but the pace of the training depends on the member. The facility is open 24 hours a day throughout the week and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. The gymn also offers general fitness classes such as aerobics and stretching.
