While residential development bas been on the rise, Buffett critized Attersley for not being more aggressive in his pursuit of new industry. Because of the lop- sided quality of the tex base, she argued, ratepayers are paying more now than they were five years ago. PETER BRAMMA Communlty Services Branch Durham Regional Police Force As a driver do you know what to do when ap- proached by an emergency vehicle with red light flashing or siren sounding? Suprisingly, when making an ernergency run, police, fire, or am- bulance drivers will nearly aiways corne across a motorist who does not respond in the proper manner and fails to pull over. If you hear a police, f ire, ambulance or public utility emergency vehicle siren, or see a flashing red light on the vehicle, get out of the way. Bring your vehicle to a stop as near as possible to the right hand side of the road and clear of any intersection. This law applies when the emergency vehicle ap- proaches you fromn any direction. Constantly check your rear view mirrors, wat- ching for approaching vehicles. Being aware of what is taking place ail around your vehicle niakes for good defensive driving. Good response from drivers would go a long way to preventing the kind of tragic accident we sometimes read about, in- volving emergency vehicles. Whitby's roads are more congested than ever these days, and com- pliance with this "rule of the road" will make our job easier, and maybe even save a lîfe (by aiiowing the emergency vehicle to arrive sooner and preven- tîng an accident en route). Also, don't reiy on hearing a siren. Some police cars are not equipped with sirens and the officer has to reiy on good response to the red flashing light only. This applies when a driver is being pulled over for a traffic of- fence, the policeman hopes that a siren blast isn't necessary to get the driver stopped and subsequen- tly disturb the whole neighbourhood. At the emergency scene obey the police officer. When traffic is directed by a police officer his direc- tions must be obeyed by ail drivers, regardless of any traffic signs or signaIs that may be present. So let's ail work together to help make emergency vehicle response more efficient.
