A 16-year old Wbitby youtb was struck and killed by a car travelling eastbound on Hwy. 401 early last Thursday morning. According to a spokesman for the Wbitby detachment of the OPP, the youtb and a friend attempted to cross the freeway at about 7:37 a.m. They were taking a shortcut to their jobs at a nearby orchard where tbey were, employed picking apples. The spokesýman said that the youtbs slipped through an opening in the expressway's sound barrier just west of Henry St. The two had suc- ceeded in crossing the westbound lanes but when James Horan, 16, of 106 John St. ventured 401 into the eastbound lanes alone he was struck by a vehicle travelling at bighway speed. The OPP spokesman said that there were four witnesses to the ac- cident, ail of wbom said that the victim walked straight into traffic without appearing to check for oncoming cars. Police added that there was nothing the driver of the vehicle could have done to prevent the accident and no charges have been laid. James Horan was taken to the Dr. J.O.
