In last week's edition of the Free Press, Local 331 president Joan Gates said that Ashe had promised them a letter of support but had yet to deliver t. Local 331 represents about 650 employees at the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital who have been without a contract since Dec. 31. The uniion is seeking wage parity with people ernployed at general hospitals. Gates had pIaintained that nurses at the psychiatric hospital are paid $4,000 a year less than their counterparts at a general hospital. Negotiations between OPSEU and the gover- nment, represented- by the Ontario Civil Ser- vice Commission, have been fruitless and the two sides are expected to enter into binding ar- bitration tomorrow. In a telephone inter- view from bis Queen's Park office last week, Ashe said he offered the letter because he genuinely supports Local 331's position. However, after the election he was narned chairman of the management board of cabinet during the shortlived ad- ministration of now Op- position Leader Frank Miller. "After being named chairman .of management board I was advised it would not be proper to have something on the record," he said adding that the senior cabinet post had overaîl respon- sibîlity for the civil ser- vice commission and its negotiations with OP- SEU. While as their MPP he supported their position, bis cabinet respon- sibilities prevented hlm from- taking action. He could not, he main- tained, be seen as taking sides in the dispute. Local 331 tnembers, Ashe said, were detrimentally affected when the governrnent introduced its three per cent wage guidelines. Consequently, WP.H. workers lost their parity with general hospital workers. . - had fully intended to comply with rnmy promise to send thern a letter," Ashe said ad- ding, 'They have a valid case, in my view."- He also claimed that while his party was still in government. he was lobbying behind the scenes in an effort to get the Treasury to acknowledge that the psychiatric workers should be excempt from the guidelines so they could gain parity. know that," he said. The Progressive Con- servative frontbencher said he doesn't know what the, current situation is, now that the Liberals have taken the reins of power. But he is stili willing to give them his support. "lil write the letter if they think it would stili be helpfl," Ashe said. "I'm not in any conflict now."
