PAGE 10, WEDNESDAY, J UNE 19.,198 5, WiIITI3Y FREE PRESS Twinig activities shoujld be expanded, Roy says Tbe bonds of frien- dsbip between the people of Longueuil and Whitby were strengtbened even fur- tber over the weekend as this cammunity bosted tbe l7tb annual twinning excbange visit. Some 65 or so residen- ta of the Montreal suburb arrived in Wit- by (actually Osbawa, at the Holiday Inn) Friday afternoon ta be welcomed ta the municipality. During tbeir tbree- day stay, tbe Longueuil delegation was bosted ta a dinner and dance at tbe Thunderbird Golf and Country Club Friday evening. Sunday, Whitby Town Council bosteci a civic luncheon for tbe par- ticipants at tbe Witby Municipal Buildings. Lucile Roy, president of the Association Social-Cultureli du Longueuil, tbat com- munities twinning committes, saîd that ber group truly enjoyed their visit. But tbere was only one small prablem. "Ob, we enjoyed aur visit s0 much," she said, 'Just one tbing - it's too short." Roy said that in future years, she would like ta ses the visit expanded ta four days. That extra, she feels, would give all participants a littie more time ta be together. Roy bas besn a par- ticipant in tbe twinning for the asat 12 years and nated that unlike Wbit- by, ber council doesn't organize the annual visita. Her association does. Even between visita, Roy says many mem- bers of ber association keep in toucb witb their Witby friends. -We do kesp in toucb," she said adding that when travelling through this part of On- tario at ather times of the year sbe of ten draps in ta visit aid friends. Alsa an band for part of the twinning visit was Longueuil Reg. Caun. Jacques Morissette who said that he would like to ses the twinning ex- change expanded into ather areas. Morissette, wha is alsa deputy mayor of Longueuil, said that he would like ta see dloser co-operation with Whit- by Town Cauncil. He says that bath communities face similiar problema and could pool informatiôn and find new solutions ta deal with them. He would like ta see a day set aside before the social and cultural ac- tivities begin s0 that both elected officiais and staff can meet ta discuss these problems. "The twinning now has done as much as it can, we would very mucb like ta see it ex- panded," be said. "I would personally like ta ses an excbange, coun- cil ta council, especially on economic matters." "The twinning sbould go a like bit further," he added. Morîssette noted that bath council will often commission studies on particular problems. Bath councils wauld save money if these could be translated into eitber Frencb or Englisb for the other ta use instead of conduc- ting its own. While be was more than appreciative of the social and cultural aspect of the twinning visit, he believes that it can becume more than that. Morisette admitted that his council bas not always iooked on the HONEY BEAR DAY CARE CENTRE <Govern ment Licensed Government Approved) NURSERY SCHOOL For chi ldren 2 to 5 years old OPEN FROM 6:30 A.
