The separated gar- bage will be collected on the same day as regular garbage days. The first collection was yester- day in the area south of Dundas St. and east of Annes St. The area was selected because it was considered ta be representative of the whole Town of Whitby. The program was in- tiated after the town council discussed what could be done with Whitby's garbage which is now dependent upon landfill sites in Metro Toronto. "We decided to look at ways ta reduce the amount of garbage from Whitby, " Reg. Coun. Gerry Emm said. Af ter the council discussed the subject of Whitby's garbage Emm visited Kitchener where a recycling project has operated successfully for a number of years. The program ini Whit- by has followed the Kit- chener model in which garbage is collected by curbside. pickup and sent to a processing plant which in turn selîs the reusable material ta interested buyers. The Town of Whitby wlll use two trucks for the project and if suc- cessful consider distributing containers specifically for recyclable garbage. The Province of On- tario will pay for the program by picking up the difference between revenue from buyers and the cost for Whitby. The collection will be of newspapers, glass and metal cans and the town asks that the ped recyclable material be at least six feet away from regular garbage so it can be easily distinguished. The town also requests that if raining residents refrain from leaving out newspapers because when wet are difficuit ta process. The town has also decided ta reimburse the boy scouts on the * newspapers they would have normally collected on their paper drives. .up Although a 'meeting held hast Wednesday was not well attended, the town is confident that once residents become aware of the program its success will increase. In this regard the town has organized WRAP (Whitby Recycling Action Program) ta educate the public whlch uses flyers, buttons and children ta tell the parents about the program.
