Local man, 28, dies in Cuban scuba accident 1985 chamber executive The Whitby Chamber of Commerce swore-in its 1985 executive committee at a luncheon meeting held last week at the Marigold Dinner Playhouse. Administering the oath of office were Mayor Bob Attersley and town administrator Bill Wallace. Free Press Staff Photo A swimming accident has claimed the life of a 28-year old Whitby man while he was on vacation in Cuba. According to a spokesman for the family, the accident oc- cured last Thursday morning while he was diving off the coast of Santa Maria in search of lobster. He was part of a 21-person tour group. Jeff Lehman was pronounced dead by Cuban authorities shor- tly after he was rescued from the water. The family spokesman said that he was seen struggling after sur- facing. He had traveled to the Caribean Island with bis father Bruce. The cause of Leh- man's death is not yet known as the spokesman said that Cuban authorities said there was nothing wrong with his scuba diving equipment. Lehman is survived by his father Bruce, of Whitby; his mother, Joan of Bobcaygeon; and by two sisters and a brother living in the Whitby area. His body will be flown home to Canada tomorrow.
