WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6,1985, WIH IBY FLE,KIh jx w w YOUR DINING PLEASURE Kristina Lee's:,e bright, brassy and very comfortable By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff It's bright, brassy, cozy, comfortabie and friendiy. It's Kristina Lee's at 409 Brock St. S., Whitby. I had lunch at Kristina Lee's and expected the usual roadhouse fare. But as manager Carol Lick pointed out (o me, Kristina Lee's isn't a roadhouse - it's a California style eatery devoted to good food and good times. Lick says (bat Kristina Lee's is the kind of place to take one's spouse or steady for a good night out. Af- ter dinner you can dan- ce the night away (o their disc jockey on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 1a.m. Prior to opening their doors last Oct. 16, owner Sam Beninato comn- pietely renovated the building which as an in- teresting local history including use as another restaurant, a real estate company and a, ahemn, ahemn, health studio. From what 1 saw at lunch, Beninato should be pleased with the work of bis interior designer. The whoie place is full of glass, brass and bright green and red neon lights. Lighting over the tables is subdued enough to make for a quiet dining experience. For lunch, I sampied Kristina 's version of garlic bread. Aside fromn the generous dose of garlic, this version features two kinds of y, yVVVVVVVVVVV B B B B melted cheese and tomatoes. A good choice for an appetizer. For the main course, I had their Fettucine Kristina. The noodies were cooked to aile den- te perfection and then combined with cream, parmesan cheese and chunks of veal, ham, mushrooms and scallions. It was a per- fectly deightful lunch. Kristina Lee's menu is somewhat shorter than is found in most restaurants in this area. Appetizers inlude such tempting items as escargot en croute, New York style chicken wings, nachos and the Kristînette, pizza stuf- fings in puff pastry (that's one item 1 have to go back and try). Their salad choices are somewhat different from what local dioers are used to. They in- clude a spinach and orange saiad that in- cludes walnuts, mushrooms, bean sprouts and a creamny garlic dressing. In ad- dition (o caesar salad, Îhey also offer a chicken with apple and almonds salad. Main courses at Kristina Lee's are divided into three easy sections: "llight and easy", "-potpourrie<' and'"entrees". "Light and easy" dishes include their Malibu club sandwich (made with turkey, bacon, tomato, avocado and alfalfa on toasted whole wheat bread), a ham and cheese croissant, shellfish serenade, the traditional burger (but on a whole wheat bun) and, of course, chicken fingers. "Potpourri" items in- clude fettucine Kristina or fettucine with seafood, soie Florentine beef or chicken sirn- mered with fresh vegetables in a hearty broth). Their "entrees" in- clude pork tenderloin Calvados, veal Marsala, chicken California -or Teriyaki and their San Francisco stir-fry (fresh vegetables, chicken, béef and shrimp stir fried with a soya and ginger sauce served with rice pila). Desserts at Kristina Lee's are not for the diet conscious. They include cheesecake, "lSky High Ice Cream Pie", deep fried ice cream, apple 52"9 pie. In addition to their daily specials at both lunch and dinner, I should also mention that Kristina Lee's offers a Sunday brunch from Il a.m. to 3 p.m. and in- cludes fresh breads, desserts, muffins, salads and an assor- tment of hot and cold dishes. This is an "al you can eat"' event selling for $5,95 for aduits and $2.95 for children. Kristina Lee's has room for 120 guests with free parking at the rear. Eating there is a wor- thwhile experience. A.C..I.hosts annual play festival By JODY BATTY A.C.V.I. "And the winner is..." This phrase will surely be heard time after time at Anderson.
