At last week's meeting of Whitby Town Council, Mayor Bob Attersley (left, in chain) was presented with a poster promoting the aixns of White Cane Week by Whitby residents Cesar Gonet (seated) and Mary Perry who are both members of the Durham Region Advisory Board of the Canadian National In- stitute for the Blind. Prior to the presentation, Gonet told council that the C.N.I.B. 's major task over the next few years wil be blindness prevention. He also noted that the blind and visually impaired population of Durham Region has grown substantiaily over the Iast few years. Gonet aise told council that blindness prevention is becoming ail the more important because the latest advances in technology are ail geared visually. And that, he said, "baves us at a distinct disad- vantage." Free Press Staff Photo Regional councillors vote themselves Herrema a four per cent salary Members of Durham Regional Council voted themselves a four per cent salary increase at their meeting last week. Under the new wage scale, regional coun- cillors Tom Edwards and Gerry Emm as well as Mayor Bob Attersley will receive $15,927 an- nually for sitting as Regional Council. That's $612 more than they received last year. The chairmen of the region's other standing commit- tees and the vice- chairman of the management commit- tee received similiar in- creases. Both Emm and Ed- wards also receive $8,845 a year as mem- bers of Whitby Town Council. Attersley is paid $24,620 a year as Whitby's chief magistrate as well as about $1,000 a year as a member of the Whitby Hydro-Electric Com- mission. However, Attersley is not paid any additional stipend as one of the region's two represen- tatives on the Durham Regional Police Com- mission, of which he is chairman. The provin- cial government's three appointees to the com- mission receive an an- nual honoraria of about $5,000. Regional Chairman Gary Herrema was also given a raise last week. Hfis annual salary will jump $1,876 to W4,817 in 1985. STORY HOUIR The Whitby Publie Library will continue to bold ts Story Hour every Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. throughout the month of February. This Saturday (Feb. 9), the hour will have a Valentine's Day theme. Feb. 16 there will be a 'Penquin Parade". Feb. 23 will be devoted to "Big, Bad, Beautiful Bailoons". This program is for children aged 5 to 9 and no registration will be needed.
