PAGE 24, WEDNESDAY, DECEIÏBER 19 , 1984, WHITBY FEE PRELS Fire ehief urwges* safety thi«s Christmas season A happy Christmas can change in a few mon;ids into a family tragedy, warns Whitby Fire Chief Ed Crouch, in homes where fire safety precautions are neglec- ted. Some precautions should head the« Iist of every sensible family's preparations for Christmas, he says. Crouch urges the public to exercise special care in the set- ting up and decoration of Chistmas trees, and draws attention to the following important points: If plan calîs for a natural tree it should be bought fresh and green, and kept outdoors or in an unheated garage before being brought in- to the home for decorating. Then, one or two inches should be eut diagonally from the butt, and the tree should be set up with the butt in water which should be maintained above the level of the eut. Check strings of elec- tric lights carefully for wrong insulation, broken plugs or loose bulb sockets. Only CSA- approved lighting sets and only non-flammable decorations should be used. Declare the tree a no-smoking area and keep matches out of the hands of children. Do not allow discar- ded gift wrapping to ac- cumulate under the tree. Dispose of them as soon as the gifts are opened. Even a green tree will humn if ignited by burning paper around the base. Set up the tree away fromn heat sources such as fire Places, TV sets or radiators. Do not allow iL to block access to doors or winidows in the event of fi're. Switch off tree lights at bedtime or when leaving the house. Crouch also points out that tests have proved that the safest tree is a tree with its butt set in water. However,. if a tree has dried out before iL is set up, it cannot regain itssafe moisture level. A dry tree can be ignited by a single mat- ch, to burn violently to a charred state in a few seconds. Ornaments and finger foods, may present danger to small can be serious fire hazards. Metallie trees are conductors of elec- tricity, and should not be decorated with strings of lights, but illuminated with floodlights. Some plastic trees, made from styrene materials, are flammable, unlike those made from polyvinychioride. Ail trees should be removed from the home as soon as possible after the Christrnas children, lung associatio-n UDItAPPEARING' CATENA-Ry-MASTS - A slender and aesthetic design that blends with the environ- ment, masts like these may carry the 25,000 volts overhead power for a section of the planned GO-ALRT rapid transit system between Oakville and Oshawa. The masts in thîs picture (arrows point to their location) were designed by Canadian Pacifie Consulting Services (CPCS) and installed on a 132-km. (82- mile) line in Northern British Columbia. CPCS, in association with Hatch Associations Ltd., a Toronto consulting engineers' eompany, is bid- ding to provide the overhead catenary system for the 25-km. (15.5-mile) Pickering-Oshawa section of the GO-ALRT network. The whole 201 km. (125-mile) GO-ALRT network is expected to be built and in operation by 1988 and bring full scale rapid transit to most of the four million residents in the area between Hamilton and Oshawa. It will demonstrate some of the most advanced light rail transit technology available in the' world today., -J By ANGELA TIBBLES During the, holiday season, Durham Region Lung Association is warning parents to be aware of a potentially hazardous combination - toddlers and small or- naments or toys. Imagine the scene: a small plastic Santa Claus dangles enticingly on a low bough of the Christmas tree. Your two-year old grabs it, puts it into his mouth then, realizing it isn't candy, tries to spit it out. But it cracks, and a piece of the plastic lodges in his windpipe, or is aspirated (inhaled) into his lungs. It's a possible tragedy in the midst of fun, because aspiration of foreign ob- jects is a leading cause of death ýand injury among children under six years of age. Holiday ime, with its bright, brittie ornamen- ts, plastic decorations and distracted parents is a particularly dangerous period for curlous toddlers who in- stinctively grab for ob- jeets and put them in their mouths. What can parents do to keep pre-sehoolers safe? The Durham Region Lung Association suggests: -Do not put tiny or- naments low on the Christmas tree; -Ask Santa to bring presents that do flot have button eyes or tiny wheels that may corne loose; and, -Remember that food ean also be aspirated, s0 keep small "'finger food" (such as peanuts and popcorn) off low tables when enter- taining. And remember that the lung association needs your support of the Christmas Seal Campaign, to continue it&, work against lung cancer, asthma, em- physema Î.and oc- cupational lung disease.
