Well, this week I'm going to add another establishment to the list - thé Chateau du Cadillac on Stephenson Rd. S. in Oshawa, just opposite that city's monster size shopping plaza. I had lunch their the other day which was my second visit to this restaurant although my first one was a year or so earlier. The Chateau du Cadillace is one of those ~SEASON'SGREETINGS FROM WEST LYN DE -M SDRIVEIN BURIGERS.%. SOUTH IR WHITBY 668-1440 places many people travel to Toronto or Montreal to find. It boasts service in the old, traditional manner with waiters dressed in for- mai attire, who seat you to your table and cater to your every whim almost immediately. As I have said before, if the food is good I wili eat practically anywhere. And the food is more than good at the Chateau. For lunch, 1 enjoyed their version of pepper steak - large cubes of beef tenderlion, broiled to juicy, mouthwatering perfection in a rich red wine gravy accom- panied by large chunks of green pepper and onion, cooked thoroughly but stili crisp. Lunch was started with a bowl of yellow pea soup which is so good I would like to steal the recipe sometime. Their dinner menu is J]HE NORTH FORTY one of the finest I have seen in this region. Both hot and cold ap- petizers are offered and include such, items as shrimp in butter and garlic;- escargot de Bourgogne, oysters R<fckefeller; gulf shrimp cocktail; marinated herring; and smoke salmon. SThey offer four soup selections: jellied con- somme; onion soup au gratin; Vichyssoise and the soup of the day. And, of course, they have caesar and Mediterranean salad (for two). Main courses will take most of the evening for the diner to settle on. Should he havé pep- percorn steak; Tour- nedos Henri IV (filet mignon served with sauce bernaise and ar- tichoke bottomes): Chateaubraind (for two, of course); beef shashlyk or the rack of lamb. Then, there is roast prime nib of beef, beef tenderlion Wellington, chicken a la "Chateau", Charlie is sick( of broken promises and has gone to the old reliable, Dickson Printing & Office Supplies for assured service. GOLDEN GATE, 107 Brock Street South, Whitby 668-8321. This popular Chinese restaurant has been in Whitby for 30 years. The speciaity af the house is bar-be-qued spare-ribs. A new dish is being in- troduced. lt's a special combinatian of iight hor d'oevres cailed Bo Bo duck a l'orange; and steak neptune (a filet mignon, butterflied and then topped with crab meat, asparagus and sauce bernaise). But, if one is a lover of seafood there is always shrimp scampi, lobster tails, Alaska King Crab legs, King Salmon Steak or Dover Sole Meuniere. Don't forget the red snapper or the frog legs provincial. The Chateau du Cadillac is a food loyers paradise. The menu of- fers such excellent choices - and aIl diners include; onion soup, french bread, the vegetable of the day and a choice of potatoe or rice. This feast is eaten in a romantically light room with the candie on the $1l20 bui It took five and a haîf hours, but Whitby Town Council managed to sa ve $120. In budget talks on recreation and public works accounts the council *nt five-and-a- haîf hours discussing the budget and possible ways to reduce it. In- the only- real development, North Ward Councillor Ross Batten accepted the budget for public works without change but wan- ted some sort of promise that Brooklin would receive funds ta repair their damaged roads. Council, meeting in committee of the whole, discussed a 10-year plan for construction of Brooklin roads. Batten platter. This promnotes a sense of quiet intimacy which is a great prize in any restaurant. But a word 0f warning - the Chateau du Cadillac is.not a cheap place to eat. You pay a good dollar for truly ex- cellent fare and service, especially when selec- ting fromn their exten- sive wine list offering some of the choice vin- tages to be found anywhere. The shorter plan would mean Brooklin roads would receive repairs sooner then ex- pected. Batten said1 he would accept the pres 1è nt budget because he realized it would be asking for one project- instead of another. However, he wants council to give serious consideration for a five year proposai for the 1986 budget. Coun. Joe Drumm, who originally objected tothe five year plan said "I have no problem ac- cepting the five year plan, if I'm back next year." 'He was making. reference to the municipal election being held next Novem- ber. The councillors them- selves were surprised at the ease in which the budget was accepted. "It's been a real pleasure", said Coun. Marcel Brunelle, this year's budget chief, "it's a real tight budget, perhaps that is the reason why there is no room for movement."
