PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1984, WHITBY FREE PRESS Brookli Hort icultural Soeciety finishes> successful year By MARGARET BEATH The Brooklin Hor- ticultural Society put the finishing touches to a very successful year, wvhen they held a Dessert and Coffee par- ty on Nov. 28. The evening aise in- cluded the Annual meeting, Christmas show and entertainment and was well attended by members as weil as their familles and frien- ds. President Ken Brown welcomed over 100 people and lead the way to the dessert table where diets were aban- doned. Ail the tables were festively decorated by Mary Housego, Joan Brak and Marilyn Love. This was followed by the presentation of awards. Highest points for the year - Dorothy Barter, prize donated by Sim- psons-Sears; 2nd highest - Audrey Young, prize given by Don Vallance Equipment and 3rd - Mary Housego,, prize donated- by Brooklin Concrete. Highest points in vegetables was won by John Beecroft, a gift certificate from Sim- psons-Sears and' this gentleman also won the Rose Bowl Trophy presented by our Society for a new mem- ber with -the highest points. The Membership Award, for the third consecutive year went te Valerie Hundert, for which she received a plaque donated by Earle & Dorothy Sandford of Oshawa. The Junior Awards given by Jack and Lyla Allan, were presented by Valerie Hundert, Junior Co-ordinator te the following: Highest points overall, Jason Young. Jason was also presented with the award of menit given by the society for outstan- ding activity- during the year. Second highest points - Jennifer Brak and third - Janet Stachow. In the under 10 age greup, prizes went to - first - -David Leedie, second Danny Young, third - Wesley Odger' and fourth - Martin Leedie. The President then presented the Society's Meritorious Award to Margaret Davis and it was the unanimous opinion that this, in- deed, was well deser- ved. Judge for the show was Ken Brown and the prize for the best decorative, donated by the Brooklin Village Pottery, went to Dorothy Barter. Following the awards, the President, in- troduced the Jubilee Choir of the Whitby Senior Citizens Activity Centre and they gave some lovely renditions cf Christmas Carols and old familiar songs. They were a happy group and seemned te enjey enter- taining us as much as we enjoyed hearing them. Entertainment was followed by the Annual Meeting and Election cf Officers for 1985 and the new siate of efficers for the society 'are as follows:, Past President - Lyla Allan;. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY AWARDS The annual Awards Night for Brooklin Hor- ticultural Association was held recently and Dorothy Barter came away with the prize for win- ning the most points throughout the year. Audrey Young and Mary Housego were second and third runners Up respectively. The rose bowl was presen- ted to John Beecroft while Valerie Hundert received a prize for bringing in the most new members.' A special award went to Marg Davis for her years of faithful service.' The junior members who received awards were Jason Young, Jennifer Brack and Janicb Stachow in that order. WHITE GIFT SERVICES On Dec. 16 both Burns Presbyterian Church in Ashburn and Myrtie'United Church wHI hold their white gif t services. Gifts should be non-perishable food items wrapped in white tissue. Both wfil be held during the morning worship services. KINSMEN DROP Box This year the Kinsmeti are asking for food donations for needy area familles. They have provided a box in the IGA wherte donations can be left to help those less fortunate people have a festive Christmnas dinner. The IGA will be making con- tributions as well. When you're doing your own shopping, please remember to include an extra something for those among us who need our help. ANNUAL DRAW The Kinsmen annual Wheelbarrow of Cheer Draw will be held on Dec. 21.
