Ottenbrite won the event with a tim e of 2:30.38 - a personal besi for the 18-year old Lyndeview Dr. resident. Her win must have been even sweeter than it would otherwise have been because two months ago her appearance in the games were in doubt. She suf- fered' a painful dislocated right kneecap after falling in a freak accident at the Montreal home of teammate Julie Daigneault. It was-not until two weeks ago that she re&eived final approval to take part in the games despite the fact that she had been told by the Canadian Amateur Swim Association that she would flot have to, compete in the Olympie trials. Ottenbrite's teammate Alex Baumann also won a gold medal in the 400-metre Individual medley. These two young people are the first Canadians to, win Olymplc gold lI swimming for 72 years. News of Ottenbrite's victory quickly spread across Whltby Monday niglit and Tuesday morming. Mayor Bob Attersley said that the town will host a celebration honoring Ottenbrite when she returns home. However, plans are flot definite although the mayor hopes to make some kind of announcement i the next few days. "This is a proud moment for Whitby," Attersley said. "She deserves the heartiest congratulations we can give her. " Ottenbrite's medal may flot be the only one she wlns. Glenn Beauchamp, 22, of Garrard Rd. made it ail the way to the bronze. mnedal round in the-71- kilo judo competition before losing to Luis~ Onmura of Brazil. Beauchamp cornes from a family of judo experts. His twin brothers - Brian and Brad - have also proven themselves to -be Canadian champions of the martial art. Beauchamp started on the road to cham- pionship when he was 10 years old and first met his coach - Charlie Formasa - when he was an instructor for the YMCA's judo program at St. Paul's Separate School. In April of this year, Beauchamp won the Canadian championship at a tournament held on Three Rivers, Quebec. Beauchamp currently trains with the Shidokan Dojo Club in Montreal. This club provided four of the seven members 0f the Canadian judo team. He is a graduate 0f Waterloo University and spent his high school years at Ander- son Collegiate. Before that, he attended the Dr. Robert Thornton Public School. Beauchamp will be part of the festivities this Saturday and will have a place in the parade.
