The day will be kicked off with a "Sunrise Ser- vice" sponsored by the Whitby Ministerial Association and a pan- cake breakfast put on by the Whitby Rotary Club. Part of the day will feature field events such as sack races.as well as a square dance exhibition and a break dance contest. There will also be a "Period Costume Con- test" in celebration of Ontario's Bicentennial. Participants should dress in the style favored in the 19th cen- tury. Admission to the event is free. BABYSITTING COURSE The Whitby Public Library will sponsor the annual Red Cross BabySitters' Course for children aged 12 and over. This eight-week cour- se wil be held on Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning ,Sept.11. Registration for the course will be accepted after Aug. 20 at the children's desk. There will be a $7 materials fee payable upon registration. Only 20 places are available so the library advises early registration. For more information call 668-6531. ALL CANDIDATES Tne Whitby Jaycees will hold an all can- didates meeting on Aug. 23 at 8 p.m. in the coun- cil chambers of the Whitby Municipal Building. Progressive Conser- vative Scott Fennell, Liberal Gary Herrema and New Democratic Party candidate Geoff Rison will be in atten- dance. All interested persons are welcome to attend. VETERANS' HELP A representative of the Department of Veteran Affairs will be at Branch 112 of the Royal Canadian Legion, 117 Byron St. S., on Aug. 28 firom 10 a.m. to 12 noon to provide infor- mation to veterans and members of their families concerning pensions, allowances and medical assistance programs available to them. FALL WALK The final nature walk of the Central Lake On- tario Conservation Authority's summei program will be held on Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. at the Lynde Shores Conser- vation Area, Victoria St. W., Whitby. The purpose of the walk is to observe the fail migration of birds and butterflys. Participants are asked to meet at the C.L.O.C.A. office, 100 Whiting Ave., Oshawa. SHOW The Brooklin Hor- ticultural Society will hold their summer "An- nuals Show" on Aug. 22 in the Brooklin United Church Hall beginning at8 p.m. This show will include many classes of flowers and vegetables, as well as a decorative class. The meet will also feature a speaker from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton who will talk about "planting to attract bir- ds to your garden." All are welcome and admission is free. CHAMBER MEETING The next meeting of the Whitby Chamber of Commerce will be held on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Cullen Gardens Restaurant. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of awards to the winners of the chamber's Marigold Contest. The guest speaker for the evening will be Reg. Coun. Gerry Emm. Tickets are $11 per person and available by calling the chamber's office at 668-4506 before Sept. 5. ONE PARENT MEETING The Oshawa Chapter of the One Parent Family Association of Canada meets every Tuesday at 8 p.m. at St. Andrew's Church, 71 Simcoe St. S., Oshawa. BOOK SALE The Oshawa Sym- phony Association is having a book sale at the Oshawa Shopping Cen- tre on Sept. 7 and 8 in order to raise funds for the orchestra. That evening, "Han- nie Caulder" a western starring Robert Culp and Raquel Welch will be screened for adults. Admission to both shows is free.
