Resi]denI Residents of the Fer- nway Cres. and RAb- blesdale Dr. will probably huve a long wait before they get let- ter carrier service to their homes. According to David Archer of 3 'Fernway Cres., the avea doesn't get letter carrier ser- vice despite the fact that one mail* route çnds not 100 feet from hie door- step. "We have no postal service, he stops right Many residents in the Town of Whltby were wlthout electrlclty for almet six hours early last Thursday morming. Accordlng hi Tom May, general manager of the Whltby Hydro- Electrlc Commission, the -Iights went out mest after 3 a.m. when a pole fire damaged the sub- transmission Uine on Thickson Rd. S. " We're not sure, but Is faceng acrosa the street from us," he says. A petition, signed by 42 area resldei>ts, has been sent to Canada Post president Michael Warren and to Audre Quellette, the Minster of, Consumer and Cor- porate Affairs as well as to the three candidates running in Ontario Riding in the Sept. 4 Federal election. The residents must pick-up their mail at the Whitby post office on we think it was caused by lightening," 'May said adding that further investigation into the cause was continuing. Most 0f thie told part of Whltby was without power unfil just befoire 9 a.m. The area froni An- nes St.. h tthe OsbaWa border south of Dundas St. was the main ares affected. Moest of thie downtown core was also without John Turner Turner to take major policy stand tomorrow Prime Minister John Turner is expected' to make a major policy annnuncement at a lun- .cheon being held in his honor tomorrow by On- tario Riding Liberal candidate Gary Herrema at the Polish Veterans, Hall in Oshawa. This wi]l be the closest that Turner is expected hi, come hi Whitby and tAie rest of Ontario Rlding during this elec- tion campaign. Judi Longfield, Herrema's campaign manager, said Monday that she hopes to ha able to, persuade Turner to stop off in Wnitby even if its just for a few minutes to do a little mainstreeting on ber candidate's behaif. The luncheon will be hosted by Herrema, Terry Kelly, the Grit candidate in Oshawa and by Darce Campbell who is runming for the party in Durham- Northumberland. Longfield said -that tickets are available to the luncheon, which wiJl begin at 11:30 a.m. Costing $10 each, they are available by calling Herrema's campaign office at 6661977. long w'ait before uunaas St. unti a Jetter carrier Is assigned to theni. Archer says his- neighbours are most annoyed that they do not have door-to-door postal service. "It's very annoying to see the postie sitting and waiting for his taxi who le going- to take him back to the post office when there'are just 42 more homes across the street, " he said. At least two of the three candidates run- nlng for the local seat in the Hlouse of Commons have^ taken up the residents' cause. Scott Fenneil, the in- cumbent Progressive Conservative MP, said that ail is requlred is a simple extension of the current cârrier's route. In response to the residents' demands, Fenneli said that he bas sent a letter to Warren demanding the service be instailed. "Within hours after it (the petition) landed in the office, I sent a letter to Michael Warren demanding the service be installed, " he said. Geoff Rison, the New Democratic Party's standard bearer, has also taken up the issue. He told the Free Press last Friday that he bas been in contact with local post office of- ficiaIs. "They assure me that the matter is in hand and they expect to be in place ini the early fail."' Rison added that this situation is typical of the problems being suffered by the post office and. that the residents have every right to expect that they receive the services they pay for. "They pay for this and they expect the ser- vice," he said adding that voters cannot ex- pect the post office to cut costs and increase service at the same time. Rison noted that the Post office is proud of t ERVICE power. May gave credit to the utllity's work crews for restoring power as quickly as they did. "They dld an ex- cellent job," Aie said, "We had to rebuild the whole pole." While there are several power outages every year, most of them are of a minor nature and do not last for very long. In fact, this is the longest outage May can remember. "This was the longest power outage I< can remember sînce I came to Whitby 16 years ago," he said. A crew of nine men were called in to deal with the emergency. "It is a very unusual occurance," May ad- ded, "We have a very reliable system here."11 Type writer RENTALS also SALES & Si WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 1984, PAGE 7 othey geit the fact .that they have cut their deficit from $1 billion to $200 million over the course of the last few years but added that this does nothing to increase service. While Gary Herrema, the Liberal Party can- didate had not seen the petition at press time, he, too said that the residents' have the right to the service. "I wouldn't put up with it too long," he said, "We're paying for it, we want it. " Archer said that most of the homes have been occupiedý for about 10 months and that ail but three homeowners signed the petition. Those that didn't had yet to move into the Pic- carrier service ture Homes subdivision when it was circulated. Bil Vaughn, the superintendant of retail collection and delivery for the Oshawa-Whitby said that the residents' request has been sent to the York Divisional Headquarters of the post office for approval. "We have made the submission," he said adding, "Once we get approval we wiil have to go through the process of re-evaluating letter carrier routes. " Vaughn said that home delivery can be expected within two months of approval, however, he did not know how long it would take to get that ap- proval.
