Director The Whitby Iroquois Swim Club held its an- nual picnic and awards presentation recently at Heber Down Conser- vation Area. Coach Tom Mcboughlin presented trophies to the boy and girl in each age group as Most outstanding swimmers of the season. 1Recipients of the coaches' award as out- standing competitors were Peggy Hefford and Scott Donnelly for 8 and under, Alison Bettridge and Matthew Cook for 9 and 10 year-olds, Janice Currie and Stewart Smith for il and 12, Michelle'Primeau and Trevor Crump for 13 and 14, and Donna Goulding and Dave Goulding ini senior swimmers. Pauline Qattes, Times Keeper, presented trophies to the most im- proved swimmers who dropped a record num- ber of seconds from al strokes in competition during the season. These awards were presented to 8 and under swmmers Shannon O'Donneil and Brad Spencer, 9 and 10 year old winners were JIUi Morrice and Aaron Bradley, il and 12, Charissa Morrice and Brad Moore, 13 and 14, Leslie Doran and Chris Donnelly, and Senior mnembers Tammy Qat- tes and Peter Pfeiffer. Special certificates were awarded to swimmers Dave Gouling, Mike Pfeiffer and Trevor Crump for breaking the minute mark in the 100 metre freestyle, a milestone for a swimmer in this event. Pfeiffer and Crump recorded a .59 each while Gouldllng achieved a .57 this season. Goulding also set an O.F.F.S.A-J record in 100 metre backstroke and placed sixth in Ontario for 100 metre butterfly, and has been recruited by Brock University should he decide to con- tinue competing at the university level. Trophies were awar- ded to the il and 12 girls teani who were the top competitors. at the "AA" Championships this season. Members of the team were Wendy Primeau, Heather Ar- mitage, Patti, Mac- Donald, Julie Leswick, Tricla Carroll, Melissa Peacock, and Anne- Marie Scott. A special plaque in memory of Donna McLoughlin, a devoted W.I.S.C. supporter, coach and volunteer, who displayed exem- plary courage and determination through- out a lengthy and fatal illness, was awarded to Coach Tom McLoughlin as its first recipient. The Donna Mcboughlin Memorial Plaque will be awarded each season to the swimmer who most illustrates these qualities of McLoughlin. As with most youth oriented sports orgamizatlons, the sup- port of those behind the scenes contributes greatly to the success and development of the entire system. The Whitby Iroquois Swim Club has numerous such mem- bers who give freely of their tinie and talent each season to further the success and achievements of the club. These contributions by volunteer swim parents were recognized by presen- tations of special cer- tificates of menit. Recipients were Christine Armitage, for outstanding organiza- tion of the club's fund- raising bingo projeet and British swim team visit, Marg MacDonald, club recordkeeper and equipment ý'manager, and Neil Norman, club photographer. Certificates were presented as well to Ann and Tom Goulding in appreciation for many years of service. -A special plaque went to volunteer grandparent Bob Donnelly who for several seasons has con- tributed newsletter reprints for the club. As the W.I.S.C. season is now winding down with just a few local meets remaining for most members, a num- ber of swimmers will stili be training to make waves in the upcoming summer provincials and junior nationals. When the new season opens in September, the Whitby iroquois Swim Club, as in past seasons, will be a team to watch out for! Window eontest The Downtown Whit- by Board of Management will hold a Canada Day window display contest with the winner receiving $100 worth of advertising in the media of his or her choice. The runner up will receive $50 worth of advertising. The judging for the contest will be conduc- ted from June 27 to 29 and will hé based on: theme, originality and beauty.
