Bugelli also told his collegues that if they want to start making wholesale exceptions to the policy, then perhaps council should scrap the no grants policy and bring in a-new one. "The policy is there," was Druznm's. com- ment, "Let's stick to it." He admitted that on the one occassion he voted grant money con- trary to the policy it cost him a lot of soul sear- ching before he made the decision. Both councillors Ed- wards and Emm said that coundil was elected to mà ke decisions and should not always be bound by policy con- siderations. "We are elected to decide for the 40,000 odd individuals in our com- munity," Edwards said noting that if these grants are not given, the community is in danger of losing them. "Couneil should be flexible," Emm added noting that before saying 9"no>9,y the politicians should weigh the benefits that, any group gives to the town. Councillor Marcel Bruneile1 also spoke against the no grants policy and the recom- mndation againat mein money to the Durham Tenants' Hotline in particular. "'We are human beings, we have to make humnan decisions about human. problems, " he said although he admit- ted that "the problem is "whereis the money gomng to corne from. " In a rate display of public anger, Mayor Bob Attersley warned the councillors that if they start making ex- ceptions to the policy they, will open floodgates that might neyer be closed. He went so far as to say that he has told at least two organizations which he described as "«being near and dear to his heart" not to apply for grant-- money one." The mayor noted that they have no obligation to "deal with them al fairly." He also gave a reason for the second ap- plication 0f the Durham Tenants' Hotline. "The reason they're here is because we changed in mid- stream." If council is going to get back into giving grants, then Attersley said that the tinie to deal wit.b the requests is a budget time. Bet we en You and Me By RUTII ('(LES Anyone who is interested in aceurate and in- teresting information about nuclear power can go to the Pickering Power Station open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. Take the tour and ask questions; you will feel assured that it is flot the monster so many people are afraid of. We ail realize how powerful certain words can be. Inflammatory language, "deadly radiation" or "lethal radioactivity" carry a lot of weight and are imprinted on people's minds and this can make the people, some people almost panie. Do we read or hear about "deadly" automobiles or "Lethal" electricty? Why not? Some 12,000 Americans suffer electrocution every year. He noted that they are "dvery conscious" 0f the environment as he discovered during a visit to Japan three years ago., "If we've got anything to seil, it's our environ- ment." Attersley also said that the town received 32 enquiries about the town from the adver- tisement- that was placed ta the Presiden- ts' Magazine. Those enquiries resulted in three,, sets ý of negotiations taking place the results of which- are not yet known. The Japanese delegation has only been in touch with Attersley's office, however, the visit has not gone un- noticed by either the provincial or federal governments which are, now going to participate in the program. These figures are from the States because at the moment the Canadian figures are not at hand. If people want -to really understand radiation it could be done by simple comparison by the media. It is difficuit to' distinguish between political and scientific issues. No doubt there are always a han- dful of renegade scientists who promote the scare angle. This can convince the public that the scien- tific community is split on issues of radiation hazards. If you are after true facts cail a weil respected university and ask for a professor of radiation health sciences and ask for his opinion which will no doubt help you find the truth. Do we regard radiation to be more dangerous now than we did ten years ago? The scientific com- munity gives us a resounding no'but often the media have given the public the impression that the an- swer is year. Last week newspapers carried a paragraph about radioactive heavy water being "spewed" into Lake Ontario. Now if that doesn't scare you, what would? Can you imagine how children and young people would react to this? The wvord spew means to eject as in body fluids £rom the body. It doesn't seem to pertain to water of any kind flowing into a lake but it sounds horrendous. One hundredth of one per cent is the amount of the ailowable release limit. A few drops a second overtime as a million gallons a minute flow through the system as the lake water cools the turbines. My words leave a lot to be desired so why not go to the station and ask questions while you receive correct answers? The word nuclear to many people means only one thing - bombs. This is one aspect but there are many good things too which many people choose to ignore or they do not understand, sometimes because they have been so brain washed they cannot com- prehend. We surely will have to pay more for power as time goes on and this is only reasonable. We are depen- dent now on nuclear power to an extend and will become more so as time goes on. What other alter- native is there? Are we willing to regress or go without power to keep our standard of living up? I doubt it. Are we willing to forego our freezers, refridgerator, gas stations and on and on. The commercial and marketing world are highly dependent on power. Shail we step backwards or try to seek the truth and come to an understanding? To understand many things can give many people peace of mind. To overeact to exaggerations and only part of the truch can be crippling. Let's help the young people find the truth and this may over- corne some of their fear.
