WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 1984, PAGE 7 Emrn gives .guarded suppor to region run landfill site Whltby Regional Councillor Gerry Emm has lent bis support to the establishment of a Durham owned and operated landflll site. * Emm, who also ser- ves as the chairinan of reglonal council's works commlttee, said that much study is needed before -a final decision on the location and the type of plant is made. "We want a high profile, dlean industrial plant," Emm said last week. "That's what we are striving for, we wouldn't put anything in that doesn't meet the àtrlctest standards."' The councillor says that the most likely location for a regional waste disposaI facility is south of Hlighway 401 in one of- the industrial parks. Emm also wanits to see the region getting into a recydling program for, paper, glass and metal gar-. bage as well as an in- cineration program. An incinerator, he ad- ded, could be buiit in conjunction with private industry to provide energy for, manufac- turing. However, he does not want Durham to end uts current -arrangement with Mertopolitan Toronto despite the fact that they increased the rates charged to Durham for waste disposal by 17 per cent two weeks ago. Durham currently used the Metro landfil site in Pickering to dispose of garbage. Emm says that the $15.50 that- Metro, charges Durham is fairly competitive when Whitby car winner A Whltby resident was the winner of the province-wide "Cheers for 10 Years" contest that was sponsored by the Pizza Delight restaurant chain. .Mrs. Chung Y Jeung of Whitby Oaks Crt. won a 1984 Chevorlet Cavalier Type-10 after depositing a ballot at the Pizza Delight restaurant on Michale Blvd. She received the keys for her new car at Nurse Chev Olds on Dundas St. E. Other regions, he pointed out, are paying as much as $24 a ton to dispose of their gar- bage. "We know what the eosts are with Metro,"' he says. Emm also points out that establisbing its own waste disposaI facility wi cost a lot of money up-front. The other major considerations are environmental. "A landfill is anything but a pleasant thing to have located beside you, " he said. Before the region commits itself, Emm wants to ensure that ail of the alternatives have been examined. "We bave a lot - f research to do, we have to look at the alter- natives, the committee will have to examine ail the costs, " hesÉaid.
