Councl Column Submitted bNnernbers <of WIIITBiY TOWN ( OUNCII, j By REGIONAL COUNCILLOR GERALD S. EMM Chairman Durham Reglon Works Committee We've just returned from our lGth annual twin- ning visit to Longueuil, Quebec. This year it was our turn- to visit our Quebec sister. Many Whitby residents have made this trip and for those who could hlot attend this year's visit the people of Longueuil send their warmest greetings. .There has been a great deal of press coverage and support given to the idea of Durham Region establishing its own means of waste disposia. Two of my favorite alternatives are recycling and in- cineration. We will, in the Town of Whitby, as a pilot projeet, est.ablish separation at source - that is, ask, the resident to separate those materials that can be recycled (such as glass, paper and metal) and gar- bage that cannot be used again. This keeps our volumes of disposable waste down which in turn saves the taxpayers' a few of their tax dollars. Recycling could be a way to create a few new local job opportunities both in the private and public sector. Recycling 18 also good for the environment. 1 ask for your support in these endevours 80 that this important project will be acceptable to my colleagues on regional council., Our town has Ibeen built and developed on the thought that each home should have a decent sized lot. This is hard to- maintain through development pressures. But as a town, and flot a city or a suburb. to a city, we"should fight these pressures and the preserve the individuality of larger lots. I see little difference between the marketable price of homes on small lots and homes on decent sized lots. Most of our new residents came to Whitby because 0f the larger lots and the builders in Whitby were able to seel their homes when the market was depressed because of the town's requirements. Other municipaliteis were flot doing as well as we were during this time. . Whitby is la place . new people choose to. live in because of the standards we have fought for to en- sure the qualities of our homes and lots in our new subdivisions. I want to urge my coundil collegues to consider the ramifications should they allow higher denisty housing - that is, to allow homes to be built on lots with frontages smaller than 50 feet. I have received many cails concerning the dan- delion problems we are experiencing throughout the town. I arn happy tosay that we are attacking this irritating problem with an intensive weed spraying programn. I have been assured by the parks and recreation department that this. spraying will enable us to control this problem. This will also be a benefit to those who suffer from severe allergies., I. hope I will be able to meet many of you throughout the summer months at the various fun- ctions that will be going on throughout the town and if our residents show' as much interest as they did in the Brooklin Spring Fair we will have a most suc- cessful and enjoyable summer. I thank you for taking the time to read this column and wish you a pleasant summer.
