Director Whitby Iroquois Pool was the setting on June 3 for the first inter- national swim meet held in Whitby. The Optimist Invitational saw swim- mers from the Wakefield Amateur Swimming Club of Wakefield, England, cross the waves for a competitive vacation. Wakefield is located in Yorkshire, near Leeds and their swim- mlng club brought 19 of their members on their first trip to Canada for the meet sponsored by the Whitby Optimist Club. The Wakefield team arrived May 25 for a two week stay and swim- mers agedl 9 to 18 are being billetted with tijeir Iroquois hosts. The Wakefield group, besides training and competing with W.I.S.C. members, have been taking in some of our provinces sights such as the C.N. Tower, Niagara. Falls, Science Centre and Canada's Wonderland. Sunday's Optimist In- vitational meet saw the British swimmers fare extremely well in com- petition with their Canadian counterparts from Whitby and other teams. Top Wakefield swimmers were John Jamieson, 10 and under boys, David Stones, 13/14 boys, Andrea Stevenson, 13/ Stevenson, 13/14 girls, and Sally Walker and Charles Austin for senior men's and women's events. Three Whitby mem- bers made a sweep of first place for ail events. Darren! Smith emerged victorious in eight and under boys 50 meter races, and Colleen Leswick captured firsts in 10 and under girls 100 meter events, as well as senior Dave Goulding. Suszanne Dainty headed the list for 8/un- der girls, and Tammy Oattes, senior girls. The boys group was lead by Scott Currie, l/under, Stewart Smith, 11/12, Chris Donnelly, 13/14.
