PAGE 5 Council changes n.ý,ind, O S&CCS sidewalk will be bujit' Whitby Town Council reversed itself Monday might and decided to construct sidewalks on the west side of Euclid St. Two weeks ago, coun- cil vote d not to proceed with the $160,000 project after local residents said they did not want it. Ail members of coun- cil voted to build the sidewalk except coun- cillors Joe Bugeili, Tom Edwards and- Gerry Emm. Emm was absent from the meeting and Edwards declared a conflict of interest because lie lives at the corner of Euclid and Mary Sts. It is ironic to note that Euclid St. is the dividing line between the west and centre wards. Voting in, favor of the motion was Coun. Mar- cel Brunelle whose walk includes that part of Euclid St. that already bas a sidewalk. Bugelli's ward is bor- dered by the part of Euclid St. where the new sidewalk will be constructed. Bugelli asked for the matter to be recon- sidered in the hope of getting council to ad- dress the whole issue of' sidewalk construction in the town. His major concern was providing room for snow storage during the winter month. He poin- ted out that the town would lose three to four foot of storage space on Euclid St. if the sidewalk was built. "lWe are going to create more problems than we solve by putting in the sidewalk when this one has done the job for 40 years," Bugelli said. However, an opposite view was taken by Coun. Joe Drumm who pointed out that the sidewalk would be build as part of a road widening project. The road will become 10-foot wider and cars driving through the area will at least appear to be going faster. He also said that sidewalks "Igive a great deal of safety to children and adults.
