Vol. 14, No. 14 Wednesday, April 4, 1984 20 Pages eo R esidents oppose service station, say it will cause them A proposal from Gulf Canada to construct a service station at the corner of Brock St. and Manning Rd. is meeting opposition from local residents. At its meeting Mon- day night, Whitby Town Council's ad- ministrative committee received a petition from over 41 local residents opposing the plan. Residents cited six reasons for denying the application including the fact that there already exist ten ser- vice stations on Brock St. between Victoria St. and Manning Rd. al of which have a minimum of two service bays. They point out that a service station used to exist on the south-west corner of. Brock and Manning but went out of business. "Who's to say there's enough business to sup- port this one as well?" was the comment of Drew Porter of Ivanic Crt. The residents also contend that the inter- section's traffic lights would have to be moved and that the increased traffic flow could prove hazardous to children crossing Brock St. to at- tend Palmerston Ave. Public School. They also fear the proposed service station would create un- necessary noise levels and lower the property value of neighbouring homes. Kathleen Chung of Bradley Dr. called the proposal "undesirable" and pointed out that it was originally zoned for residential purposes. However, council gave the property an in- stitutional designation to allow for the con- struction of a 237-bed nursing home. But the facility was never built. Chung said the land has gone from residen- tial to institutional to commercial. "What's next, iridustrial?" "This is a residential neighbourhood, it would increase traffic, noise and pollution," she said adding, "Housing is what should be built in a residential neigh- bourhood." However, the lawyer for Gulf Canada, Alan Leibel defended the plan saying it is "an ap- propriate spot for a ser- vice station. It will have the least impact on the residential area.", Leibel asserted that service stations do not generate more traffie, they merely serve the existing traffic. pro'blems "They don't generate from the traffic on their own ... ning depar they attract what is peeted to b going by in any event." administra Leibel said that most tee in fourw people use service stations on their way home and this faciity SJA. will not affect traffie because motorists fle v would have to make right hand turns to enter TORONT or leave.
