WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4, 1984, PAGE 11 The Dr. J.O. Ruddy General Hospital's, long term and rebabilitative care unit wiI open--its doors next Monday and it is already full. According - to the unit's head nurse, Bar- bare Steele, ýthe 16 long terrn' (cbronic) care beds are afready taken as are eight of the 16 rehabiitative care beds. The unit wiil be housed on the second floor 0f the hospital which bas been empty for a number of years. Steele said that the, staff for the floor has been hired and includes 16 registered nurses, four part-time registered nursing assistants, a clerk, a recreationist, an or- derly, as well as part- tirne occupational and physiotheràpists. Ail of the equipment bas been ordered and the renovations are alrnost complete and according to Ruddy administrator' Jirn Miller the *project is currently running sorne $7,OOO under budget. According to Steele the new unitwiil work on the primary nursing care system, that is, each of the eight full- tirne registered nurses wiil be responsible for four cases and wiil have to respond to their needs on a 24-hour basis. The average age of the applicants wanting to get into the unit is 75 and Steele hopes that the unit wiil develope a horne-like atmosphere. The residents who are capable of doing things for themselves will be encouraged to do s0 in- Speaking, to You By SCOTT FENNELL f >Mm(PC -Ontario) Recently, I read various articles in a business magazine which I regularly receive ini my Ottawa office. This magazine is cailed Look Japan, and is published ini Tokyo. Ail of the articles are based on the latest advances which have been made in technology in Japan, and the possibilities of how to apply them to the workplace. If found that I was greatly distressed, after reading the latest publication. Without a doubt, Japan is ini the forefront in the development of technology. I arn very worried because Canada has failen so far behind, because of the Liberal Gover- nrnent's lack of investrnent in research and development. Right now, Canada has the distinction of having the worst productivity rate in the in- dustrialized world. While the other industrialized nations have been doubling and trebling their in- vestment in the technological field, Canada has spent less. Because of this, Canada will have to work three times as hard, just to reach the same level where the other industriaized nations are right now. If Canada is to achieve prosperity, we must attack this problern. Canada bas this capability, the people and ideas are ont there, and bec-ause of this, when the P.C. Party forms the next Govenment, we wiIl make R. & D. spending a priority and encourage the produc- tion of new technology in Canadian industries. This will also assist our economy with the creation of new jobs and ensure an increase in new sales and investrnent in Canada.' Canadien, industry bas waited for far tSo long for this support, and there 18 no reason why they should waitt anylonger'. cluding such daîly living skiils as doing laundry. "In rny experience, the ýaverage length of stay is six to eight mon- ths," Steele said adding that the unit will attem- pt to bring their clients (patients) to a, point where they are capable of going into a nprsing horne. "We are going to care on a wellness rather than on an iilness con- cept," Steele continued, "And we will look after the family as well. " Helping the client do for thernselves is going to be the major thrust of the nursing prograrn. "We want the clients to have sorne control over their lifestyles and to have a say in what's going on," Steele said, "We ernphasize in- dependance here and we encourage thern to take control of their life. " Facilities will be in place to prornote each individuals needs for privacy even to the point of providing a ful batbroom for each roorn. Most nursing home and other long terrn care -facilities have communal bathrooms. The unit will also have a dining room and those who are able to est there will not be served in their rooms. Steele ernphasized that the nursing programs will be based on the needs of each in- dividual. "It is very, im- portant for their needs to berecognized." ç To introduce the public to the unit, an open bouse will be held on April 28 and Keith Norton, the Ontario Minister 0f Health will officially open it during cerernonies to be held on June 13. wE c J PRINTING9 invitations -matches. serviettes With the aII-new Betamovie from Sanyo, you can record your movies right in the camera.
