A recent survey found that the batteries in 17 per cent of ail1 vehicles driven on Canadian roads will be replaced during the next 12 months. It's a figure re- peated year after year. Heart of the system Think of a battery as the heart of your vehicle's elec- trical system. It stores the energy needed to start the engine; supplies, extra power to your heater, head- lights, power windows, and seats; and controls surges of high voltage that might otherwise damage electri- cal components. Although some batteries can last up to seven years, on average - and under normal conditions - thire years is usually the maxi- mumi. Then, natural aging and falling winter tempera- tures combine to prevent it from creating the energy necessary to start your car. Under certain circum- stances, batteries can wear out sooner. A faulty voltage regulator can cause the bat- tery to overcharge, while low-mileage driving or in- frequent use can cause a severely-weakened condi- tion known as sulfation. 0f course, a battery that has been banged around, too ioosely or too tightly in- stalled, is also doomed - through abuse - to early failure. Cold weather, is your bat- tery's enemy. In cold weather, it doesn't put out its full voltage. On a very cold day, instead of produc- ing 12 volts, your battery may onlyproducenineor 10 volts. To make matters worse, the oil in the engine is cold, making it harder to crank. To help your battery on cold days, make sure ail ac- cessories are off when start- ing your vehicle. A word of caution: Your1 battery produces* and emits hydrogen and oxygen, es- pecially when it is near full charge. These gases are highly volatile. So tW avoid the pos- sibility of explosion keep flames and sparks away from the batter.y. A,*fellow I know forgot this and lit a cigarette as he was bending over the b)at- tery of' a car that had been neglected for some time. In- stan tly, th ere was a violen t explosion that tore off' the top of the battery. Luckily, ail ny friend l(st were his eyebrows - and his dig- nity. It could have been much worse. If you need a new one... Be sure the battery you buy is powerful enough to do the job. Batteries are rated two ways: The cold- cranking amp rating that indicates the power the b)at- tery cani supply tu crank the engine in cold tempera- tures; and the reserve ca- pacity rating that indicates the battery's ability to de- liver enough electricity to start.your car and to) power headlights, windshield wipers, and heater-defroster at l(>w speed, under the w(rst driving conditions - namnely, on a winter night. Your owner's manual will tell you what size bat- tery you r car req ui res. An d, if you need further adviée, don 't hesitate to talk toyour service station technician.
