By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff The Town of Whitby has rarely been without a newspaper since its incorporation as a munlcipality in 1855 and the Whitby Free Press 18 proud to be carrying on the tradition. ,According to publisher and managing editor Michael Burgess: "The free, Press 15 striving to maintain the same level Of newspaper service to Whitby that our forebearers did. " This tabloid weekly first hit the streets of the County Town in 1971 and was taken over by current management two years later. Despite the fiercely competitive newspaper industry in Durham Region, the Free Press has manged to ýgrow substantially since the early days. Wecurren- tly boast a circulation Of over 22,000 aweek. "Over the past three or four years, our' cir- culation has grown to the point where we are reaching more homes in the area than Toronto Burgess says. even the papers," The Free Press is also mass saturating homes in Brooklin, Ashburn, Myrtie and Myrtie Station as well as the outlying rural areas through the postal system. And over 100 local boys and girls are emf- ployed delivering our publication to homes within the urban areas of Whitby and Ajax. We also newspapers circulate in rural Ajax and Pickering as well as Port Perry. The Whitby Free Press is divided into four departments: editorial; advertising; production; and, cir- culation. The editorial depar- tment is headed by the writer who holds the formai titie of Com- munity Editor and i8 responsible for the overaîl news-gathering functions. Also mem- bers of this department are our contributing columnists and car- toonists. The lifeblood of every newspaper is adver- tising and the Free Press sales staff is headed by Conway Dol> bs. The Free Press is published every Wed- nesday. The over~a1l operation of the newspaper is Burgess' responsibility. But he also takes pride in the fact that he has personally been in- volved in many local organizations over the years. "We are most proud of the fact that the Free Press 18 the only newspaper specifically serving the Town of Whitby that i8 owned and operated by in- volved Whitby people for Whitby people," he says, "In fact, the Free Press .i8 the only newspaper serving Whitby residents that is actually located in the town, and paying local taxes, "None of our 'com- petitors can make that claim Burgess has beenac- tive in the community having served as the chairman of the Whitby Central Business District Improvement Area Board for three years. He has also ser- ved as the president of the Whitby Chambèr of Commerce, and the Whitby Jaycees, and was appointed to the property standards committee for several terms by Whitby Town Council as well as having served as the president of the local branch of the Ontario Humane Society. "Because we live and work here, it 18. our in- tention to bring to our readers ail of the impor- tant and relavent issues in the town," Burgess says. He points out that the Free Press has often fought for local causes such as leading the fight to keep the Whitby of- fice of the Durham Regional Police Force open 24 hours a day. The Free Press was also* successful when if- organized and conduc- ted a survey and presen- ted a. petition to town council that eventually saw the establishment .of the Whitby Transit Service. "This newspaper has played a role in the life of Whitby, and we wil make every effort to continue to be a truly community news- paper," Burgess added, "'Every community should have its own newspaper and it is our hope to continue to be Whitby's newspaper for many years to corne.
