Submitted by mnembers of WHITBY TOWN COUNCIL. By REGIONAL COUNCILLOR GERALD S. EMM Chafrman Public Works Commîttee, Reglon of Durham I would like to thank the Whitby Free Press for bringing back its '"Councîl, Column". I feel it provides my collegues and myseif with a good op- portunity to make our concerns known to the people of Whitby.-'r1 Both the town a nd'the region have struck'their budgets for 1984 and'I'm pleased to announce that the tax increases for our local taxpayers will be' minimal, indeed. In fact, the total increase for our two municipalities will average less than $20. However, the Durham Board of Education has yet to set its 1984 mil rate so the total increase isn't known yet. Last- year, Whitby experienced tremendous growth and this year promises to outshine al previous predictions. This can only mean that the town will continue to enjoy a sound, stable economic position. As many of you may have read I arn encouraging the regional works committee to promote the recycling of waste within our region. Much research ia being done world wide on this irritating problem St udent c entre now open The Canada 'Em- ployment Centre for Students opened its Whitby office Monday. The centre opens during. the summer months to help students, find sum- mer jobs 'and to help employers hire student staff. Students looking for work are invited to register with the centre located at 132 Dundas St. W., between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday., Employers wishing to hire students for a day, a week or a summer are asked to cail 668-5233.. For further infor- mation contact Theresa Leger at 668-5233. Pressure Treated 51 Hlgh Wood Fonce and my feeling is the sooner we eliminate -the eyesore of landfill sites the better off our com- munityý will be. The politicians need your support and encouragement in this endevour. A local item that has received much press lately is Whitby council's proposed home occupation bylaw. Simply put, my position is that 4 amanis home is his castle" and I have not seen an abuse of neighbours' rights to justify council intervention in these matters., We should not prevent any local résident from carrying on his business at home provîding that hé is not detracting from his neigh- bours' property or well being. Council. would be. better off to deal with isolated cases, if and when they come-up. I am happy to say -that the-,old BrockSt. bridge will soon disappear from our main street. I don't think too many tears will be shed over its démise. The reconstruction project will kick-off the GO- ALRT program later this year. Well done, the CO- ALRT team responsible, for getting rid. of this eyesore. The construction of the Port Whitby'diversion sewer is coming along nicely and when the spring weather finallyarrives, the constractor will be cleèaning up. As we aIl known, Brooklin has the worst .water supply situation in the region and, hopefully, sometime withîn the next few weeks I will be able to report what kind of action will be taken to help solve these problems. Unfortunately, we are in a "wait and see" situation and must bide our time for a solution to be found. During last week's blizzard, the town's snow clearing crews did an outstanding job despite the fact that they were bogged down on numerous oc- cassions. We are still one of those municipalities that is known for gettingthe job done quickly in situations like these. As always, I am encouraged by the letters and phone calîs I receive. Any. local resident who needs to contact me for assistance is welcome to caîl the councillors' office at 668-5803 or my home anytime. SPECIAL Per Linear Foot <Dependlng On Terrain> P.S.T. Wrltton Estlmate Cali ~L'WHITBY PENCE 666-1,400 Building permits valued at just over $2.6 million were issued by the Town of Whitby during the month of February. The vast majority of this represents residen- tial growth although in- dustrial building per- mits values at $478,000 were also issued. These, figures do not include the $1.78 million Canadian Tire, Cor- poration store development on Gien Hill Dr. The town'is definitely outpacing last year's growth by a s'ubstantial margin.. Since the beginning of 1984, the value of permits clim- bed to $6.4 million. Last year at this time, BABY PHOTO The Whitby Jaycettes Sprîng Baby Photo Con- test will be held from Mar. 9 to Mar. 24 at the Whitby Maîl. Applications will be accepted anytime from the Whitby Mal Florists. The $2 fee should include a 3 x 5 photo as well as the parents' names, ad- dress and phone number as well as the child's name and age. The con- test is for children aged 3 and under. Voting will be based on the money donated, L.e., 1 cent is 1,vote and1 10 cents is 10 votes. the town had only issued $1.5 million in permits. 0f the 75, permits issued to date in 1984, 70 of them have been for residential construc- tion. This compares with only 29 in the same period last year. To avoid confusion it should be pointed out that the town raised $30,156 in permit fees. Last year, this revenue only amounted to $13,466. Mayor Bob Attersley is clearly overjoyed at the figures which he released for public con- sumption Iast week. "As. I've said, we're going to roll in '84," he said, "I couldn't be hap- pier"' rC.F. Also in the picture is Don Ferguson, the chairman of the Easter Seal committee. Ferguson said that this year's campaign is already underway. Monday night, the Rotary held a "stuf- fing bee" of 14,000 envelopes that will be distributed throughout the town asking for donations in return for a supply of Easter Seals.
