WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1984, PAGE 3 Town will have t'o. expand IroquoisParkcomplex T he Town of Whitby will have to expand its recreationai facilities over the next few years to meet increasing demands- according to Centre Ward Councillor Marcel Brunelle. Brunelle made the comments iast week in response to the first report of the Iroquois Park Feasîbiiity Study which was made public Iast week. In an effort to deter- mine recreational needs ini the town, the ,consult- ant, Jean Montieth, distributed 3, 186 sur- veys to private in- dividuals and speciai in- terest groups. The random sampie public survey showed that 59 per cent of the responding famiiles use the Iroquois Park Com- plex while 41 per cent did not. According to the- sur- vey report, the new facilities Most in demand are a fitness room, an exercise room, and adcitionai ice sur- face, a racquetball facility, a squash faciiity, and indoor ten- nis courts. These resuits sur- prised Brunelle, who aiso serves as the chairman - 0f the recreation department. "I'm surprised at the number of people who wanted a fitness room," he said, "I would have thought it would have been hockey or soccer or something like that. " The purpose of the study, he added, was to give Whitby Town Coundil some idea of, the' average individual wan- ted to see done in recreation. "lIt should give us some information about the difference betWéen what the general citizens tell us we need and what the various organizations need." While the survey has given Brunelle and his department some idea of the needs, the next major hurdie is finding the money to f11 those needs. And it looks as though the town will either have to expand Iroquois Park Complex or build an en- tirely new facility. "The survey, thus far, has showed ns that we need them," Brunelle said, "It looks like we're going to have to build some kind of facility. " However, before- committing public money to provide these recreational needs, Brunelle would llke to deterînine whether or flot the private sector is capable of providing them.' "What can the private sector provide better than ns?" he asks poin- ting out that there is no fitness centre, per se, in the town. "These are the kinds ,of things we have to know." The councillor points out that the town has been able to keep tax in- creases down over the past few years and he is reluctant to propose any measure that would resuit in a substantial tax hike in the coming years. "We're on a pay as we go situation and I'd lilce to keep to that. " This Is a fairly com- prehensive study and covers every recreational 'facility from 'Ashburn to the lakte and Brunelle notes that everything seems to impact on Iroquois Park. It is there that any expansion of facilities will take place. PIANO e- £N VISIT DURHAM KEYBOARD CENTRE 355 BL OOR ST. W. "We have to priorize the needs rather than respond to pressure groups, which is more or les what has been done inthe past. " Although another public meeting will be heid sometinie in the next. few weeks, Brunielle is confident that the final report, complete wlth recom- mendations for action, will be brought to coun- cil before the end of April. If that schedule holds true, the councillor believes that any con- struction program would begin a year later.
