Mele was one of 16 Durham College students from Whitby to receive diplomas in the nursing, electronic engineering technician and mechamecal engineering technician programs at a convocation held Jan. 21. David Wright of Whitby received his diploma in the electronic engineering technician program. Graduating from the mechanical engineering technician program were: Gary Kasepchuck, Adalbert Potzkai, Michael Sait and Keith Wager. Besides. Mele the following received their diplomas for the nursing program: Terri Dekker, Sherri Dick, Lillie Forbes, Renata Graziotto, Elvera Kopylciw, Marian Ravestein, Judith Reiprich, Mary Taylor, Victoria Warner and Robynn Winterburn. AIDS subjeet of science, lecture The Durham Board of Education and Durham College present. the second Science Lecture in the 1984 series at Henry Street High School in Whitby on Feb. 7. Dr. Stanley, Read, Associate Professor of Paediatrics and Micro- biology ini the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Hospital for Sick Children, will talk on Aids (Acquired Im- munodeficiency Syn- drome). This is a new disease entity which fir- st appeared in the United States in' 1979, and has been increasing wit.h over 2,800- cases reported at the present time. High incidence groups include .homosexuals, intravenous drug users, Haitians and hemnophiliacs. The three year survival is almost zero. The etiology is unknown, although epidemiologic evidence suggests a tran- smissible agent, probably a virus, which renders the immune system non-functional. The lecture starts promptly at 8 p.m., and there will be informai discussion and refresh- ments following the presentation. Other speakers in the Science Lecture Series will include Dr. Ron Mullin of University of Waterloo on Computer Security Systems on Feb. 28 at Durham College, and Terry Alsopp of Environment Canada on El Nino and other factors affecting_ our weather, on April 10 at Henry Street High School in Whitby. The Durham Science Lecture series is co- ordinated by' Ambrose Samulski and Ted Shiner of Durham College, and Joe Hir- cock, Alan Marks and Ron Ennis 0f the Durham Board of Education'. $600 theft Unguard'ed propane equipment at an Ander- son St. construction site feil prey to thieves sometime over the weekend.. According to the Durham Regional Police Force, the equipment was stored next to a house being built by Sorichetti Con- struction of Oshawa. Taken was 100-lbs. propane tank, a propane heater and a propane torch valued at $600. Police said that prior to this incident a bathtub and a front door had also been taken from the site. However, it was not reported until the latest theft was discovered. Coins talken How they gained en- try is stil unknown but thieves took $300 worth of silver dollars from a Dufferin St. apartment last Wednesday. According to the Durham Regional Police Force thfe theft took place sometime between 8:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Taken was a jewelry box containing 13 1962 silver dollars, three Centennial silver dollars'and about 20 of the coins minted bet- ween 1963 and 1972. Police also reported> that a pair of gold cuf- flinks and a few tie clips. as well as two sticks of gum were also taken.
