STANLEY ISHERWOOD Rector St. John's Anglican Church "This is how people wil know that you are real Christians," said Jesus, "they, will see the love which you bave for each other. " I guess that means that there's a real shortage of real Christians. It's not so much "religious wars" such as the Irish problem which make me say that as it is the simple lack of love which is the day to day experience of SO many of our congregations. And even there, it's not so much that there's any evidence of hate, though God knows that is sometimes there, as it is simply a lack of positive, active love. If Jesus is right, and those of us who are Christians believe that he is, then an outsider visiting a congregation of reai Christians might well say, "Those people really do love each other." But how would he know? Probably the first thing he would notice is that the members of the congregation actually know each other. And because they know each other they know him, a stranger (definition: a friend you haven't yet met), and they meet him and show their love. In times of persecution Christians have needed secret signs to identify each other. Today's sign is an out- stretched hand of welcome. Wbich leads to another indication of this Christian love, its physical expression. You can see it in the genuineness of a smile, the fervour of an embrace, tbe earnestness of a greeting. One of the first effects of love, including "agape" love (Christian love), is to overcome fear of closeness and sharing. And it makes Christians vuinerable. Given time our visitor would ciscover another characteristic of this loving congregation - tbey are anxious to meet one another's needs. When you know each other and are close to each other in Christ, you don't need to bide your needs. We ail have them and we can al belp. Finally he would discover that those people who love each other pray for eacb other and wlth each other. He would learn that it's flot their innate at- THE CORPORATION 0F THETOWN OFWHITBY CONTRACT W84-12 TENDER FOR SALE 0F RESIDENTIAL BUILDING LOT Tenders will be received by the underslgned un- tii 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 17, 1984 for the sale of residential building lot, being Parts 1 & 2, Plan 40R-7628, located on the east side of Athol Street (north of Burns St.) in the Town of Whltby.
