Ashe, who also serves at the Minister of Government Services in the Ontario gover- r the building, Ashe did point out that it was the region's advantage to seil the building. Firstly, the province is already the major oc- cupant of the building with space being taken up by both the Ministry of Revenue and the Ministry of the Attorney General. Ashe also said that the main feature of the building are the four courtrooms which he notes are not suitable to renovate for any other use. "It' would be imprac- tical to use them for anything else, " the Tory frontbencher said. The building currently bouses the. council chambers and the of- fices of the chairman, the chief administrative officer, the clerk and the solicitor. Otherregional departments are housed, tbroughout the Whitby- Oshawa area. Ashe said that the province was not con- sidering purchasing the building until he per- suaded bis cabinet collegues that-it migbt be cheaper to buy it than to construct a new cour- thouse facility on tbe nortb side of Rossland Road opposite tÎie Whit- by Municipal Building. 20% OFF EVERYTHING IN THE STORE UNTIL JAN. 31ST184 I Fomrano 728-6809 !N ORTH 295 Ritson Rd. "If the region wants to seil, we'll talk, " he said, "If not, we already have other plans under con- sideration."' Wbile he would not say much the province, was willing to pay for the building be did in- dicate that $5 million was "a good, ballpark figure." Ashe also hopes that if Durham decides to build a new headquarters building that it will stay in Whitby pointing that this community bas been the seat of regional and county government for well over 125 years. Durbam Regional Chairman Gary Herremna was quoted as saying last week that he expects as much as $100,00 to be included in this year's budget for the design, of a new headquarters building. Both Ashe ýand Herrema have said that an independant ap- praisal of the building is being constructed. Construction of a new regional headquarters building is also seen as an impetus to more development in the area. Markborough Developments Limited 91L- submnitted a proposai to regional and local coun- cil a couple of years ago that cails for both com- mercial and residential development on 258 acres of land lying to the north of Rossland Road opposite the headquar- ters building. The plans for a population increase in the area of about 6,000. Neither Ashe nor Herrema expect any deal to be signed until some time later this year. rCF.
