PAGE 14, WEDNESDAY JAN UARY 11, 1984, WH ITBY' FREE PRESS Local'skaters qualify ftor Canadian Championships Two local figure skaters Wil be com- peting in the 1984 Canadian Champion- sbips in Regina, Saskat- chewan, this week. A send-off reception in bonor of Christina Lilly, 13, of Whitby, and Scott O'Neill, 16, of Brooklin, was held in Whitney Hall, Iroquois Park Arena, on Jan. To qualify as com- petitors in the Canadian Championships, both skaters had to place in the top four standings in two previous meets held last year. Christina, witb ber partner Mazin Thomas, from the Preston Figure Skating Club, won a silver medal in the Novice Pair Level in the Western Sectionals held in Preston.j In the Divisional Competition, held in Winnipeg on Dec. 13 to 18, they won a bronze medal in. the Novice Pair Level. Scott won a gold medal at botb the Sec- tionals and Divisionals in the Novice Level. Christina, who enjoys in terpretative dancing, borseback riding, and art,-is a Grade 8 student at West Lynde Public School. She joined the Whitby Figure Skating Club when she was 7½/- years-old. She bas skated precision for four years and is qualified for Amateur Coacbing. in 1981, she skated in competitions in Cobourg and Uxbridge and won two gold medals. In 1982, she competed in Uxbridge again and won a silver medal. She has sinice competed in Oshawa and Scar- borough placing in the top five. Christina skated with tbe Whitby Precision Teams, Ice Pics and Ice Angels, and witb ber fellow skaters managed to win 8 otber medals and. the silver medal at tbe Canadians beld in London, Ontario. She attends spring, summer, fail and winter schools and is presently double clubing between Whitby and the Preston Figure Skating Clubs. Mazin Thomas bas been her partner since the try-outs in June, 1983. Scott won his first gold medlal in 1979 while competing in the Juvenile Level. As a Pre-novice, be ,won another gold medal at the 1980 Sectionals in both Dance and Freeskate. Mfter ad- vancing to Novice, he won a silver medal at the 1981 Sectionals. Scott, who spent last summer working witb a veterinarian, is a Grade 12 Honour Student at Anderson Collegiate. Although he plays the piano and enjoys hor- seback riding, bis main interest is French. This year he bas been teaching French to students in Grade 2 at E.A. Fairman Sebool as part of a French Co-op Program. Scott joined the Wbit- by Figure Skating Club in 1975 at the age of eigbt. In May of 1983, be passed bis Gold Freeskate Test whicb is tbe bighest Test awar- ded by tbe CFSA. Cbristina and Scott are tbe first Whitby Figure Skating Club mnembers to compete in tbe Canadian Cham- pionships. Councilor Brunelle, wboi ted the Marcel represen- Town 's Recreation Department at the Friday night reception, spoke briefly to tbe assembly of friends, relatives, and club members.
