Last winter was a comparatively mild winter ini Southern Ontario, and many of us were able te sur- vive wlnter drlving without ensuring that our vehicle was in top runnlng condition. But this year, the weather bas been significantly colder, and winter maintenance techniques should be considered to assist in combatting the effects of winter on fuel consumptiop. These procedures in- clude: use of *a block heater; cold start idling technique; -use of winter-grade o11. Bef0re we examine the methods by which these procedures can decrease fuel consumption, let us look at three major problems associated with win- ter driving: bigher viscosity of lubricants in the engine, transmission and axles; increased heat loss te the coolant and the air; and prolonged ap- plication of the choke. Use of a Block Heater Block heaters warmn the engine coolant, and j therefore the engine, enabling the vehicle to start easier and drivesmoother. In addition, both the engine and component 111e are extended and TERia.OUGH eAA W 2 exhaust emissions are reduced. Recent studies conducted by the Ministry 0f INGLI IBERAItR Transportation and Communications indicate that one or two hours of block heater use is ail that is required, and makes the use of the block heater WS E more cost-effective.R030 In a series of road tests, pre-heated vehicles - 3 cycles - 5 wash/rinse temperatures saved from 4- 8 percent of fuel consumed during the Our Regular Price $689.95 SV tand savings generaily icreased with the size January Clearance Special 91- Of engine.
