The day-long event will begin with a question-and-answer pe- riod foilowed by workshops for more in- depth discussion of the unemployment situa- tion. Sandy Manuel, Self- Help Co-ordinator with CMHA, Durham Region Branch, and Nancy Handleigh, Director of the Distress Centre of Durham Region, have been planning the forum since August. "The forum is not at- tempting to teach people how to get a job, but wIll try to help people cope wlth stress and depression when facedý with unem- ployment" said Han- dleigh. The Durham Region Distress Centre bas found the number of cails from jobleas per- sons bas risen to 6 per- cent this year from .4 percent in 1982, in- cluding an increase in callers under age 20. Handleigà h also says it is common for al unemployed persons to pass through attitude stages of shock, op- timism, pessimism and fatalism. To further combat the mental and physical health consequences of the unemployed CMHA has published a 128-page document entitled Unemployment - Its Impact on Body and Soul. Such -questions- as:- What are the most common responses to job loss? Are youth the sulent victims? What does unemployrnent have to do with 111 health? Does workless mean worthless? are explored. The volume was prepared by the National Human Impact of Unemployemnt Committee of CMHA and written by Dr. Sharon Kirsh. Manuel believes the book is "very realistic" as it contais many per- sonal -cases and com- mon sense suggestions. Anyone may obtain a copy by sending $11.50 to Linda-Hyland, Direc- tor of Communications, Canadian Mental Health, Association, National Office, 2160 Yonge St., Toronto, Ont. M4S 2Z3.
