Data Bank One of its Kind The Whitby Public Library is now offering the Social Research Data Bank, the only resource information centre of its kind in the Durham Region. The Social Research Data Bank contains studies, reports, direc- tories and much more, on social issues and agencies throughout Whitby, Oshawa and the Region. To date there has been no consolidate library containing information regarding the social agéeies of 'our area, commented Reg Smith, chairman for the Social Research Data Bank Project. "There wasn't one speci.fic location where «aIl necessary in- formation was available, so we iden- tified with this short coming and decided' to facilitate this problem." The data bank covers* a wide variety of subjec- ts on senior citizens, the disabled, day care ser- vices, counselling,- criminal. justice,. and al other aspects of social services available to the public. Much time has been involved in colaborating socially relevant infor- mation for the project data bank, which began approximately one year ago. The data bank con- tains -about 700 reports, which are held at the Whitby Library and about 250 reports which were dispersed to the region at various locations. Catalogues listing the research are also available. The Social Data Research Bank, spon- sored by the Social Planning Council of Oshawa/Whitby, re- ceived funding from the Federal Government, the Canada Community Development Program, Canada Employment and Immigration for the project, which cost $42,602. The information is available to the public and will serve as a useful * device for professionals, students and concerned citizens. Whzn it is financiaily feasible, computerizing the Data Bank will, be considered., Thlrty-one arts, engineering, environ- mental studies, mathemnatlcs and ap- plied science students in co-operative education programs at the University of Waterloo (UW) have won $100 prizes for writing the best reports on their off- campus work terms May-August, 1983. The prizes are offere4 by a number Canadian companies, the Sandford Fleming Foundation and two UW faculty members. The students are enrolled in "ico-op" programs in which four-month, on- campus study terms are followed by four-month, off-campus, career- related work terms with business, industry or public service emn- ployers.
