Between Youand'Me f zmý pBy RUTHI COLES If the crities were always rlght we should be ln deep trouble. - Robert Morley Hydro bashing has become a popular pasttime and this should be a concern to ail of 'us. To be used as a political football is shocking. There should be a limit to how far this can go. If people were informed and bad straight facs none of this could happen. The press baàs bem80 adept at attempting to teil us that good news-is no news and of course this applies to ail themedia. There are s0 many misconceptions around about Ontario Hydro while at the same time it is con- sidered te be the best in the world! Unless one un- derstands the ýoperation and ail the things per- taining to it, it is almost impossible to make judgements. Making judgements about anything we, are flot in- formed about is foolish to say the least. One needs to understand the facts, ail the facts te determine what the issue is. Ail the time and*space given to bashing could be used to explain many things. However many of the 50 cailed bashers would flot be interested and those who are interested would make every effort to. find the truth anyway. 1The minority who are always so vocal -are often wrong in their assumptions and judgements. Facts are very often distorted or contain no facts at ail. So people, some people, are grabbed by this type of thing, while others, either ignore it for what it is, or laugh. Canada is a world leader in energy, s0 why can we flot encourage and help s0 that we can progress and get on with it? Where is our prideý and sense of ac- complishment? Why'don't we stand behind 'our great accomplishment if *we search for the truth? We are flot at war, our land is flowingwith milk and honey. Now there are those people and only some thank God, that protest at every turn. How can anyone let alone a country to- prosper under these cfrcumstances? - eý " It is generally flot know by everyone 'how much lead time is required te make electrical energy' commerciaily available following the construction 'of any type of generating station. I understand thiis New is. about 12 years ln the case of a coal fired plant and 16 years for a nuclear plant. As forecasting has to bo done in a positive manner, neyer a negative manner to ensure that power is available for ail purposes at any give tine. The forecasters have to consider what the growth and demand wil be many yoars honce. Before the recessi on they anticipated the average growth rate to ho about 7 percent each year which meant that the size of the system, genorating plants, tran- smission linos and se, on would double in ten years. If the recession had not taken place and the growth rate had continued, as in previous years, thero' would have been no surplus power. The only power available would be of that required for roservo, which is always providod for to ailow plants te be taken out of service for routine maintenance and other contingencies. On the other. hand if the forecasters ten or fifteen years ago had agreed thore would be a recossion, whlch no one can do, they would only have ailowed a growth rate of about 2 percent each year. So if there had not been a recession, thore would have been a considerable shortage. 'f power resulting 'in brownouts and possibly blackouts. Have you ever Iived through either of therm? Who can say even today what the demand for eloctricity wiil be say fifteen years from now. It ail depends on the economy. That is only one aspect of the wholo. There are many more.
