Free Press Staff Photo, Mayor Dem ands Fair 'Space- The automotive task force issue has proved to beqwite a controver- sial topie over the past couple weeks. .Mayor Bob Attersley called a press conferen- ce Thursday, deman- ding equal coverage in the newspapers so that he could clear Up uncer- tainties'raised -about the. issue. Last week, Coundil voted- against a resolution from Local 1090 of the United Auto Workers, asking for support Of the Federal Task Force on Canadian Motor Vehicle and Automotive Parts In- dustry. Attersley received critism from Gary Lilley of 109 on this decision against the task force recominen- dations. The mayor commen- ted that Liley failed to SUpply sufficientInfor- mation to what he had asked for. He stated that he couldn't possibly support a recommen- dation when he hadn't evýen read the report. "The only information available- has corne through the press, and we. don't deal with issues in that way. " Councillor' Tom Ed- wards statement that those who are un- familiar with resolutions should flot be sitting on coundil, was also defended by the lack of information received on the task for- ce issue. *Attersley then went on to discuss the hypocrisy of the United Auto Workers. "I took a drive through the south parking lot of the GM plant and I won't men- tion the number of foreign cars parked in that lot." Attersley commented that if the UAW were true to forni, then, it is time the Union went to the em-. ployees to see that they were buying Canadian <manufactured cars.' Attersley was also skeptical on the reports published on the nuin- ber of jobs this recom- mendation could create. "I've read figures of 130,000 and 80,000, now which is right?"' 'he damanded of the four members of the print media present at the conference. He questioned where the figures had been ob- tained from., as. the reports hadn't been, released yet. The mayor also demanded that an apology be printed to Counciflor Joe Bugei, for calling him Tom Bugelil in one of the reports ,written i another newspaper.
