WHITBV FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAV SEPTEMBER 7,, 1983, PAGE 3 Betwee n You and Me, By RUTEI COLES What Are Little Girls Made 0f? Sugar and Spice And Ail Things Nice. A long hot summer happily enjoyed by four young girls who worked long anid hard to produce their version of Alice In Wonderland. Days and evenings of planning, making their props, learnlng their lines *and numerous other things which go into the making of a play., The theatre a garage in Moore Park, Toronto, an area of beautiful*trees overhead and blue skies. The driveway a place for the audience to sit row upon row to watch the production unfold. The players ail friends, neighbours and sehool chums ranged in age from, six to il. Pia, aged eleven,' Patty,- nine-and-half, the same age as Lara and last but not least Meredith almost seven. This Play was, a repeat of the same produeed last summer. The transformation of the 'garage was a sight to see. The walls covered by sheets stapled. overhead by a dad, who has a long reach. A tree, black trunk and limbs painted on white paper stapled,î I think, on a frame attached to a lad- der, and a rose bush made'of paper,,painted with spray and pastels. The door opening of the garage was covered with drapes and just outside the door a blackboard with the words, Alice In Wonderland supported on a frame. Somehow I wouldn't be surprised if the whole idea didn't stem from the "dress up box". Can you not just hear them.saying as they went through the box, 11et's have a play" as they pulled out the contents? The makeup they did the mselves and very effec- tive it was. Between their costumes, makeup and wigs they were a very profession' looking group.. Ideas for the, play came from ail of them, fromn books they had read and their own ideas of. what should be. Few arguments and best of ail, agreement between the four. Caring, thoughtful parents whodid not partake except to give th em support from beginning to end., Giggies, an integral part of being'a. girl, were heard from*morning until dusk. Does anyone ever outgrow spasms of giggling? I don't thlnk so. It's always there as life goes on lurking in the background ready to spring at the most inopportu ne tirne and often to our consternation. A seven-act play with much dancing and singing, forgotten limes quickly filled in as they went along much to our enjoyment. The grandparents, friends and relatives thank you ail,. Pia,. Patty, LIAra and Meredith for a thoroughly enjoyable, eveming., We may see your names in lights sometime in the future and to you Meredith, Uncle Robin and Grammy are very proud of your acting abiity and again we say, "1thank you.
