Water. contaminaà tiion spreads to Durham BY TIM BAINES Communlty Editor Hfigh water con- tamination levels bave spread to Durham Region with the closing last week of two local beaches. -Warning signs have been posted at French-, men's Bay at the foot of Liverpool, Road ini Pickering and Rotary Park in Ajax at, the mouth of Duf fims Creek. According to Bilan Devitt, director of en- vlronmental bealth for Durham Région, the warmings have been posted because the water contains too much fecal coliform. This coliform or bac- teria are indicators of raw sewage con- tamination. The health unit bas been sampling local beaches on. a weekly basis and say the levels, i. Whltby and, Oshawa bea 'ches are flot really i danger. It la largely because of the blistering heat of this summer the bac- teria levels bave in- ereased. "The warm water bas affected the ability of the bacteria to survive in the water," said Devitt. The safe limit la 100 fecal coliform per 10 milogam,.of water. The readig taken at thé tWo beaches -range between just over 100 coliforms te just under 200. Devitt' stresses the readigs are accurate because they are based on at least five samples taken over the week period. Devitt la confident Durham will not suffer the problems currently' besetting Metro Tor-nto beaches. "ýThe readlngs .here a re üowhere near*wat they are in Toronto, " he said. He also warns tbat people swimming at the contamiated beaches could potentially get eye, ear, nose and throat infections. He adds' vonuting and diarhhea are also- remote possibilities.
