This 15 the third and final stage of the Com- pany's plan to cut down on fraudulent third number caîls billed froni a payphone. Last year, Bell operators stopped ac- cepting third nuxnber local cails billed from coin telephones. On April 15 of this year. on aIl third num- ber long distance calis from coin telephones operators began attem- pting to contact the biled party to confirm that the person placing the cail was known and that the charge was, ac- ceptable. However if verification was not possible because the line was busy or there was no answer, the cal was stiil put through. Starting October 17, ail such numbers will have to be verified before the caîl is con- nected. If there is no an- mwer or a busy signal at the billng nuxnber, the leson placlng the cal h ave the option of mvig by coin, calling to r using a long distance Calllng Card, or calllng another tume. Murray Makin, Bell's vice-president of customer services said the October 17 date was chosen to allow customers Who regularly make third number cails from coin telephones to obtain Calllng Cards. "Calling Cards will allow customers to charge long distance cails at regular operator-assisted ra- tes," Maklnsaid. Caling Cards are available to qualfiled business or residence usera at no charge and can be obtained by completing the ap-. plication formn that will be enclosed with their August telephone buis. In 1982 there were more than 250,000 fraudulent third number long distance cails pîaced from coin telephones in Bell territory resulting in a loss of more than $1.3 million. This is a 90 per cent increase in fraud of this type since 1900. Deputy grand master James E. Speers, of Whitby, has been named district deputy grand master for the Grand Lodge Masonie Order (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons). Mr. Speers, who has lived 34 years in Whitby, is a mason at David T. Carnpbeïl Lodge No. 706. Free Press Staff Photo Federal grants given Federal governument grants for a total of $24,447, awarded to two groupe of retired people in the Whitby area, were announced by Health anq;d Welfare Minister Monique Begin today. One of the local groupe which received a grant- was the Sun- nycresters -Residents' Coundll, Dundas Street East, $5,o74, to further develop a program 0f recreational activities such as music, dance, exercise classes, arts and crafts, cooking, pool, shuffleboard, car- pet bowling and indoor galmes. The other was the Whitby Seniors' Activlty Centre Grey Power, Brock Street South, $19,373, to expand* an exlsting program of ac- tivities including a hot lunch service, hearing cllnic, health and nutriion courses, metric conversion cour- ses, and courses on legal issues and outdoor summer programs. New Horizons is a federal government programn that enables retired people to crate projects of their own choosing. It offers gran- ts to groupe of retired People who undertake acti-vities for the benefit of themselves and others ini their com- munity. The'accent is on local needs as seen by older people and on their wiilingness to meet such needs.
