PAG E 14, WED NESDAY MAY 11, 1983, WHITBY F REE PR ESS F SPORTSWEEK Swimmer disqualifiied Anne Ottenbrite, a Whltby girl, appeared destined for . a gold medal In the 100-metre breaststroke event at an international swimn meet in Leeds, England this past Sunday but her first place finish was wiped out when she was disqualified for using an illegal "doîphin kick" in the event. Ms. Ottenbrite, a gold medaliat at the Com- monwealth Garnes last -.year, captured first place in the 200-mietre breaststroke Saturday but was disqualified Sunday when referees ruled that her kick was an illegal doiphin kick. This means that her kick ends with ber feet breaking the surface. Ms. Ottenbrite, 16, was also disqualified in the 400-metre medley relay for using the kick. "We told her, to use the very sarne kick again in the relay, " said Canadian coach Ken McKinnon. "I can't find anything in the rule book that says ber kick is illegal." "I'm flot going to change my stroke," she said. "I have neyer had any hassies before and I'm flot going to Jet this- stop me."y Ironfically Ms. Otten- brite used the kick in her Commonwealth Games medal perform- ance.
