The Station -Gallery's current display of art- work froin the local public schools and high schools provides a fas- cinating record of how perception changes as we grow and iearn. Is this true and, if so why? -Do the old timers resent new- corners? I hope not. AUl our newcomers can add an added dimension to our town. .The old cliche which began in California years ago, "bave a good day" and which is despised by many Canadians could be a lot worse. At least it ends in an upbeat manner. Many tbings seem to be out of proportion, salaries and wages for onething. Not, everyone can rise Io the top or for that matter discipline thems'elves to deny themselves for the present and the future. Never-theless there should be room for the -in- *betweeners to make a living; the artisans to name a few. It would add to our stature if we bad such people earning their living ini Whitby. Dan Thomas, an art consultant with the Durham Board of Edu- cation, explains that art really does work in help- ing students understand and master the basic concepts in their school curriculum. "Seeing how kids per- ceive, and how they in- terpret whi4 they per- ceive, is very important in education,"IThomas says. 'Without a strong base i pattern, shape, texture and colour you cannot learn read." Thomas belleves art is central.to leanning,.' especilily for young children. For example, a child may bo capable of spellhng a word with plastichie before bis muscles are capable of writing. "When you think about it," Thomas says, "Thinga like pattern and rhythm are all a part of thlngs like learn- ing -to read. " He believes the cur- rent display at the Sta- tion Gallery gives students a chance to have their work shown, and to see the artwork of other students in Whit- by. ."Instead of seeing their work only in their sehool, they get to see the work from older students," Thomas says, addung this often provides uncentive for younger students to con- tinue painting. While most of the art- work displayed 18 in paint or crayon, some.. sculptures and mobiles have been uncluded. Of special lnterest is a four-foot paper mache sculpture of a horse.
