Bet ween You and Me BY RUTH COLES The vigorous are no better than the Iazy dur- ing one half of 111e, for ail men are alike when asleep. Artistotie (384-322 B.C.) la tis reaily so, or ls It the stimulation caused by conversation, readlng or television? Better stili, la it a hang up from listenig through the years te that oft repeated phrase? [n this day and age when does middle age begin? [t la fashionable now to categorize every one and every thlng, and this means figures .are bandled about from, it seems te me, the late forties and up, "ipast their prime, middle aged and senior citizens. " This brings us to coffee. Some Urne ago I read that coffée was a great aid i helplng people after or at middle age te sleep. Like everyone else I have my share of sîcepless nights when my mid te 50 active, my body so rested that sleep evades me for hours. Fretting about tis or worrying makes it worse and certainly cannot be good for you. Just take it i stride and go along with it. Most of us may not need ail the sleep we get but we do need peaceful nights flot anxious ones. The norm seems te be worry and tis te useless; save tis type of thinklng for daytlme when you cun work off your frustrations wlth physical effort. Neyer havlng been a coffee lover but alway aa devotee of tea the Idea of coffehi the middle of the nlght was not too appealîng. Tes of course at bed- Urne te not too desireable as It acta as a dluretlc. At first 1 resteted the Ides of coffee after a few bours of no sleep and too much thlnking, but I have tried It and for me It works!1 Why? la it a physical thing or is It a thlng of the mid? Dmesit work because we believe or is it because we think in, a positive way? Who knowa? Why does it apply only to middle aged people? Might it work for anyone? Have you ever wondered why Europeans and sometimes the British warm milk before adding it te coffee? The reason te that there is an enzyme i the milk which conflicts wlth coffee. By warming, flot boilig or aimmering, this enzyme te no longer activeý and coffee is not longer upsetting to many people. This ides has no doubt been handed down from age to age without understanding of the resson why. Where does your mind lead you on these restiess nights? Ini many directions, along many avenues and countless roads. StimÛlated by numerous stimulants such as books, conversation, TV, your thoughts can jump about. 1For me, on such a night this week, the Indian topic was foremost i my mind, due of course te. the meetings in Ottawa. Hindsight it seems is always better than foresight. This te natural due in part to experience. Sometime ago I heard a wite woman discussing ber 111e on a reserve while married te an Indian. 1 coundn't help but wonder why we as a nation had been so fooleh i our deaihga with our native Especially now we are able to abaorb and assirnilate people of ail nations into our system. Colour, race and religion don't enter into the pic- ture, ail these things are accepted with few strings attached. Ail races, Pakistanies, Jamaicans, East Indians you name them and we have them. They bring their own culture, their philosophy which of- ten varies from ours to a great degree but we absorb them. Our Indians are Canadians first and foremost. What they are may be our creation. We know there are many problems, terrible problems, which are almost bopeless to deal with. Ail you need to do is go west or talk with those who deal with the Indians. Due in large part to our mismanagement of these people, we have problems from the time the white man came to this country. Why was it so necessary to, try to force these hurnan beings to give Up their culture and way of 111e to become as we are? Is our way the.only way and who can say it is the best for ail? Tis is utter nonsense and totaily wrong. This-woman pointed out that ail the reservati ons were located far from cities and towns. Now. they are dloser due to lever expanding cities. I had neyer given any thought to this and just accepted it as being a part of the whole. The ramifications of this are tragic and sad. Now we have commuters, it is a way of Ide and a'n affor- dable one. How were these Indian men going to find work? Walk maybe 20, 30 or 50 miles to a place where they migbt find employment? Impossible. What about medical care? Where would it be found? For that matter where could anything be found? Many, of course, were able te escape and become weil-educated and successful. We know of such a faiy i Ontario; the succeas has been han- ded down te the children and grandchildren. How could we ailow this to happen to our own people? Why could we not ailow them to have their own culture as we have ours? This woman also said she could neyer return to the white man's way of life. Return to visit yes, but not te sty with ail ber old friends. The Indians, she said, had a loyalty te one another, a compassion and integrity whicb she found lacking i our society to a great degree. Cof- fee parties no doubt enforced this feeling!i And 50 it goes.
